Have you read the rules? There is a list of blackhat activities that are NOT supported. And the point is not asking for rep its to earn it, in which most skids here do. They ask for rep and don't do anything to earn it.

Lol just don't steal programs without giving credit. Try python as your first 👍

This is what I am going to do in college. Computer science major ftw!

* - Screwbacca - Jul 17, 2010

Yeah me too. I plan to do computer science major :D

And it depends on your intentions as well. Choose the language that you feel is best for you. Learn that language and then branch off to others like java c/C++ as those languages are harsh to beginners.

VB.NET does not teach bad programming habits anymore than C++, it just makes it easier to do

* - Screwbacca - Jul 19, 2010

C++ is just not a good language to start with. The link I posted had some really good information.

This is from Eric S. Raymond

Quote:Windows users, do not settle for Visual Basic. It will teach you bad habits, and it's not portable off Windows. Avoid.

And another:

Quote:Also, like other Basics, Visual Basic is a poorly-designed language that will teach you bad programming habits. No, don't ask me to describe them in detail; that explanation would fill a book. Learn a well-designed language instead.

One of those bad habits is becoming dependent on a single vendor's libraries, widgets, and development tools. In general, any language that isn't fully supported under at least Linux or one of the BSDs, and/or at least three different vendors' operating systems, is a poor one to learn to hack in.

ESR's C/C++ Opinion:
Quote:If you get into serious programming, you will have to learn C, the core language of Unix. C++ is very closely related to C; if you know one, learning the other will not be difficult. Neither language is a good one to try learning as your first, however. And, actually, the more you can avoid programming in C the more productive you will be.

C is very efficient, and very sparing of your machine's resources. Unfortunately, C gets that efficiency by requiring you to do a lot of low-level management of resources (like memory) by hand. All that low-level code is complex and bug-prone, and will soak up huge amounts of your time on debugging. With today's machines as powerful as they are, this is usually a bad tradeoff — it's smarter to use a language that uses the machine's time less efficiently, but your time much more efficiently. Thus, Python.

But everyone's entitled to an opinion. Thanks for the comment 😉 👍

Wow thanks for all of the comments and views! I didn't expect this tutorial to get alot of view and replies lol. Keep it up :D

Great tutorial. One question though. How should i go about getting linux. Should I put it on this computer as a second OS, or buy a new laptop and make it completely linux?

* - Screwbacca - Jul 19, 2010

Good question! You can put it on a CD. Its called a live CD. Go here to figure it out. Also check in the Computing section of HF.

Just as long as you do something about it. Your in the process of becoming a non-skid/hacker haha. Just keep working at it!
