Apparently MaRk aka Unusable was DDoSing the site.

I'm looking into why Apache locked up now and so far found no answers. It looks like from server bandwidth stats that indeed it was a DDOS attack early this morning that locked up Apache and even when the attack ended Apache remained locked.
Oh well shit happens.
