It's four different posts as one and when you try to edit it, it brings them all up. If anyone knows a way around please this let us know.

(Dec 28, 2010 03:34 AM)Zeon Wrote:  Btw, I have the following problem. I use HP Drive Guard, which protects my computer with 128 bit encryption (TrueCrypt uses 256). The problem is, I installed Windows 7, which smashed any software I had previously installed, including HP Drive Guard, which came with my computer. Now I still have the encryption, but I can't deactivate it. Is 128 bit encryption enough?

So let me understand your question a little better..

You had HD Drive Guard on your computer, then you reformatted up to another OS, and overwrote the encrypted data?

If this is the case, you are fine. Just Install TrueCrypt and use it for full drive encryption. It will re-encrypt everything.

In fact, when I go to reformat, I don't even bother to decrypt my HDD. I just boot from a CD, and reformat from there.
It may not be healthy for my HDD, I'm not sure, but I haven't had any problems.

As for your second question, "Is 128 bit encryption enough?", I would say yes if you're just defending against loss of privacy or confidential information in case of theft.

It depends on who you're up against though, and also the encryption algorithm used during encryption.

If your HDD is seized by the authorities, you don't have the level of encryption that you should, and you also have a weak password, there is a chance they will break it.

It also depends on how bad they want you. If they want you bad enough, they have ways to get to you.

It is rumored that the NSA has super computers that can break encryption algorithms in less than 30 seconds that would take a home PC over 22,000 years to break. I guess this is a primary reason why it is the agency with the biggest budget out of any of them.

A clip of the documentary that fact is contained in can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-u0_n8wilp8

I'm not sure what part it is, but I think the discovery channel is fairly reputable when it comes to their facts.

Additionally, often times other encryption software companies are 'rumored' to use so called backdoors in their software that will allow law enforcement to bypass any encryption.

TrueCrypt is open source - and the source code is available if one wishes to review it, although I'm unaware if it has been analyzed thoroughly or not by a "professional".

This ensures that there are no backdoors in the software. I would recommend using only TrueCrypt, for this reason alone.

Hope this answered your questions, and thanks for letting me know the pics were down, but I guess there's not much more to be done with that.
