Thanks for the great feedback guys! It's really appreciated.

Since this thread was ed I'd like to take the liberty to post a few more links here since I'm unable to edit the main article.

In the tutorial I stated that in some countries the use of encryption is illegal, however I don't specify what countries those are.

So I've found a couple of great sites detailing it.

This site here has a ton of information about the legalities involved around encryption. I highly recommend it.

Also, you should see the maps here and check whether it is even legal to use TrueCrypt in your country.

Fortunately, TrueCrypt has the built in plausible deny-ability feature that will allow you to have a 'suitcase with a false bottom' form of encrypted archive or system.

So even if encryption is illegal in your country, such as Russia, you can probably still get away with using it.

But this doesn't change the fact that it is still illegal to begin with. So use your best discretion and make sure the rewards outweigh the risks.

I really want to/need to encrypt my 1TB external HD, but I'm scared of losing 200Gb of files, and have no way of backing them up... What is the chance the this could go horribly wrong????

not sure if its been said, but thats no security whatsoever, if they seize your computer there is a jumper in your pc they move then move back and the password on the bios resets
