Would OP8 ever consider starting a CTF team to compete for rankings on CTFTime? I used to run my University's CTF team (graduated last year so no longer officially affiliated, but climbed to the top 50) and have been looking to start or join a new team.

I'm going to be real with you...that sounds fun and something I would be interested in talking about. But in reality something like what your talking about would need a dedicated team of atleast 2 or 3 members. The concept sounds fun, but the execution would take a lot of dedicated work...I just dont see us getting to a proper CTF team on our current roadmap without some serious help. If that's something that interests you and you think you may be interested in putting together and leading an initiative like what your discussing let's talk. Something like CTF tied up with HF crews could be a neat idea if crews don't totally revolve around the hack game.

You can always find me at the defcon wall of shame and we can have some real fun master shake.

I don't mean setting up your own CTF's, as you're right, that's both time consuming and rather difficult. I just mean forming a team within OP8 that competes in the public/online CTF's that get posted to https://ctftime.org

Generally there's 1-2 CTF events per weekend, sometimes more, sometimes less. They range from challenging CTF's that are based around qualifying for more advanced in-person events, to beginner CTF's meant to introduce you to CTF's in general. Usually these events include anywhere from 10-30 challenges ranging from crypto, web exploitation, binary exploitation, reverse engineering, forensics, networking, and so on.

It's really enjoyable getting a group of 5-10 people together and hammering out these challenges, helping each other out as you go, seeing how high you can climb on the leaderboard.

Looks like I have some homework to do, I'll check it out. Thanks dude.

How's the recruitment process going so far?

A bit underwhelming, We had thought about what you said (CTF's being too easy) but with the lack of interest from the general HF public it doesn't seem like anyone is really interested in the challenges.

That doesn't negate the fact that with the small team we currently have, we are working on some really cool ideas (I assume it will just take longer since I was expecting a bit more help)

Maybe once we release a few initiatives in March people will be more interested in OP8, I get it, we are a new group and not many people know the name, so I totally get the lack of response...I think it will be a different case entirely once a few of these ideas we have come to fruition.

Small percentage of the people does CTF in general. Hence the low interest in that challenge.

There's nothing wrong with the challenges. They're easy if your understanding of programming and general computer knowledge are up to par. Perhaps a little bump here and there will help you attract the right kind of attention, but you have to keep in mind that there's currently very little activity in the development sections, hence the low influx of programmers (at least that's my personal look on things).

I'm sure that with the right marketing and group activities that you'll see general interest in joining rise. Disregard what Zeus did though, that completely crossed the line. Contributions to the programming sections would be greatly appreciated, by the way, so if you guys are planning on making any tutorials or best practices, that would be interesting to see!

I couldn't agree more, OP8 Learning Sector is working as we speak for an initiative that is similar to what you're thinking. Thank's for the kind words and advice.

Nice to see a group here in which doesn't require a buy-in and accepts based off of one's skill and application content.

hey there i'd like to buy in

RE: [OFFICIAL] OP8 is Recruiting - It's about time... - Tyr - Feb 21, 2020

Timezone do you Reside in? I currently reside in the GMT -5 time zone. Eastern Standard Time.
Are you fluent in English? I am extremely fluent in English and bilingual to a certain extent.
What sector are you most educated in? This is a very tough question for me because I like to consider myself to be a very diversified individual. I would have to say that the "Design Sector" is where I am most skilled. I have worked with Photoshop and Dreamweaver since the age of 13 and have quite a lot of experience within web management.
How much time can you realistically devote towards group activities per week? I make my living from my home and live quite comfortably. I also have cut off quite a lot of toxic "friends" from my life and consider myself more of a lone wolf and now simply strive to better myself in every aspect possible. With this being said, I am always on the computer. A rough estimate would be upwards of 30-40 hours a week, depending on the week, of course. This is just an average estimation on my behalf whilst taking into accordance my personal life.

I would link a forum and discord with unique logos in which I own that has much of my work on it, but I would be breaking site policy by doing so.

(Most designs are related to my old gaming project's website theme. I also marketed the entire theme itself on a separate board years back in exchange for currency. It is almost 6am and I need to get some sleep. I will upload many more if need be from a flash drive tomorrow that contains more of my personal work if need be). This is a freshly created DeviantArt, as it would seem my old one was hacked.

Thanks for looking over my application and artwork associated with it. I know it's not much, but it's better than nothing for the time being. I am also extremely tired and must stop for the day. Hopefully I can find that flash drive.
