ZoneAlarm Free Firewall or Comodo Free Firewall? - linksku - Apr 16, 2011

These two are the two free firewalls that I hear about the most. I'm looking for speed more than solid security. Which one is better?

* - Always - Apr 16, 2011

I used to use ZoneAlarm and it worked pretty well so I recommend that.

I think ZoneAlarm can block DDoS's or something, I'v heard that.

Use Comodo it has a sandbox feature to isolate unknown programs and known malware exploits, something that Zone Alarm does not have. The only other firewall that compares is Kaspersky and that is not freeware. In the past Zone Alarm has been known to falsify it's test results by saying it had passed leak tests when in fact it failed those tests. See www.grc.com for info on Zone Alarm and to use their fire wall intrusion test to determine the stealth and effectiveness of any firewall you have now or plan on using.

Take care

comodo is fast solid and has lots of updates. zone alarm doesnt update too often. comodo also has more options for advanced users.

I started using Comodo a few days ago when my McAfee license expired. I've been really happy with it so far.

I use online armor I like it more than those two.

Comodo firewall with the defense+ is the best!

Online Armor>Comodo>Zone Alarm

Use Comodo Firewall a great Software, So I Recommend that.

I found that ZoneAlarm does not contain the full path when alerting me about whether I want to allow or deny access. For example, an alert box might say "SD is trying to access the Internet". Does Comodo do this?

* - T3h Hack3r - Apr 18, 2011

I prefer Comodo, I've found that ZoneAlarm tends to prompt the user more asking if they accept "x" to run on their computer.

I've used Zone Alarm a while back, and If not configured correctly upon Installation, I found It to be somewhat annoying with prompts etc..

Not sure If It's Improved since.

Security wise, being prompted to allow connections is the best option, as then you can allow only the connections you trust and any malicious connection is well, human error.

Both are very good and taking either one won't affect your security but I find Zonealarm to be over-protective and annoying with all its messages. Not to mention, it sometimes blocks my application from connecting without my knowledge. Comodo with defense+ is better than regular Zonealarm because Zonelalarm free is only a regular firewall while Comodo with defense+ is a application firewall as well which moniters your system for malicious activity. Currently I am using Comodo with defense+ and I am loving it 🎉
