[TUT] Spoofing your MAC adress on OS X - A Honey Badger - Jul 25, 2011

Hi, Today I'm going to teach you how to spoof your MAC adress on OS X 10.7 (Lion). Note that I did not rip this from anywhere specifically but have compiled it from a group of different websites(have since lost the threads but I believe macrumors and other mac forums)

This will be done entirely in terminal

Step 1. First open up terminal and check your current MAC adress this can be done with the following command

Quote:check: ifconfig en1 | grep ether

Step 2. Disassociate yourself from all wireless networks, this is to make sure that it truly switches your MAC adress. Once again this can be done with the following command

Quote:disassociate: sudo airport -z

Step 3. Now we're going to actually change your MAC adress, the mac adress can contain the numbers 0-9 and the letters a-f (correct me if I'm wrong I could be off a few digits). Use this command to change it.

Quote:change: sudo ifconfig en1 ether [random mac here]

Step 4. Go back to step 1 and check to make sure it shows a different MAC adress. Now if your uncreative like me and cant think of a random enough MAC you can use the following command to generate one for you, just plug it in the Step 3 command.

Quote:openssl rand -hex 6 | sed 's/\(..\)/\1:/g; s/.$//'

Congrats your MAC adress is now changed momentarily and you can reconnect to wifi. You will need to change it again upon system reboot and possibly upon waking (havent tested personally, sorry)

Stupid question, but I know that changing your MAC address is used to get around Wi-Fi paywalls and such. Is there a way to find all of the MAC addresses on the network and then use that to get around the paywall? Or is there more involved? This has been something I've wanted to learn for awhile now, lol.

errr I believe Cain and Abel was able to get the MAC adresses of other connections, not sure if theres anything on OS X that does this, but Im not completely sure about getting around a wall, I may test it out tomarrow with my mac and ipod

For getting the mac address of the users in your connected network Download inet. A small and simply application that analyzes your network

If you were to arp poison with ettercap you could then pick up the MAC addresses of the people being arp poisoned using ettercap.
