Shinkai's Hoshi o Ou Kodomo Licensed in North America

The 2011 Waterloo Festival of Animated Cinema (WFAC) in Canada revealed on Sunday that Makoto Shinkai's Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below (Hoshi o Ou Kodomo) anime film has been licensed by an unspecified North American company. This development led the festival to cancel a screening that it had planned on Sunday.

The film centers on Asuna, a girl who spends her solitary days listening to the mysterious music emanating from the crystal radio she received from her father as a memento. One day, she embarks on a journey of adventure to find a mysterious boy she just met, and thus comes to know the cruelty and beauty of the world, as well as loss.

The film is the latest work by Shinkai, the creator of Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and 5 Centimeters Per Second. The new film opened in Japan on May 7.

Takayo Nishimura (5 Centimeters Per Second, Before Green Gables) designed the characters and oversaw the animation process. Takumi Tanji (5 Centimeters Per Second, The Place Promised in Our Early Days) directed the art, and musical composer Tenmon (5 Centimeters Per Second, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, Voices of a Distant Star) collaborated with Shinkai again on this project. The film held its North American premiere at Otakon in July.

Live-Action Cowboy Bebop Producer Involved in Lawsuit

The Aspen Daily News paper reported on Tuesday that two investors, Debra Goldstein and her husband Bob Ritchie, filed a lawsuit in Colorado's Pitkin County District Court on November 10 regarding an investment they made into Joshua Long's digitial distribution company Instavision. The lawsuit contains six claims, including fraud, breach of contract, and negligent misrepresentation. Long helped put the proposed live-action film adaptation of the Cowboy Bebop anime in development.

Goldstein and Ritchie said that they loaned US$250,000 to Instavision, and that loan has not yet been paid back. The lawsuit mentioned that Instavision was to pay Goldstein and Ritchie US$15,000 a month to pay back the loan plus dividends, and that the entire loan was to be paid back by May 2010. The plaintiffs also mentioned that Goldstein and Ritchie received one interest payment of US$20,000 from Instavision.

According to the lawsuit, Joseph Long (another member of Instavision), emailed Goldstein and Ritchie four days before they loaned their money to Instavision. The plaintiffs said that the e-mail suggested that Goldstein "might like to see an interview with Keanu [Reeves] regarding Cowboy Bebop, which we are producing at 20th [Century Fox]." The e-mail also reportedly mentioned that Instavision was producing "Fruit Baskets [sic], another anime franchise property. Ann Peacock is scripting — she did the Chronicles of Narnia."

Goldstein and Ritchie's lawsuit alleges that the e-mail, among other correspondence, is "full of misrepresentations and omissions, and was an attempt to induce the plaintiffs to make loans to Instavision. Instavision was not producing Cowboy Bebop with 20th [Century Fox]."

According to plaintiffs, Instavision asked Goldstein and Ritchie for another US$165,000. Goldstein and Ritchie then asked Instavision for accounting records, and said that they received "a couple of cursory spreadsheets without backup."

Aspen Daily News reported that it did not receive a response from Joshua Long regarding the lawsuit before press time. Goldstein and Ritchie are seeking a jury trial. A review is scheduled with Judge Daniel Brett Petre on January 6.

Joshua Long revealed a new company called 1212 Entertainment in 2009. At the time, Long said that the company would be focusing on live-action adaptations of manga, anime, and game titles from Japan, as well as some French comics. Other live-action film adaptations Long has said that his company is pursuing include the Kakurenbo supernatural horror anime and a Kazuo Koike work.

K-ON! Film Gets Midnight Screenings

The Apollo Cinemas 8 theater in Osaka announced this week that it plans to hold midnight screenings on December 3 so it can lay claim to "Japan's earliest showings of the K-ON! film."

Midnight screenings are very rare in Japan; even blockbuster films will not start playing in any theaters until 9 in the morning at the earliest. Most theaters, including Apollo Cinemas 8, close their doors by 11:00 p.m. or earlier. In fact, Apollo Cinemas 8 warns people driving to its K-ON! midnight screenings to park elsewhere; its own parking area in the Apollo Lucias Building closes from midnight to 7:00 a.m.

The theater will charge its usual adult ticket price of 1,800 yen (about US$23).

Universal Studios Japan Hosts K-ON Cast, Life-Size Statues

The amusement park Universal Studios Japan hosted a live performance by the K-ON anime's main voice cast and unveiled the life-size figures of the anime's five main characters on Sunday. Over 5,000 showed up for the live performance by Aki Toyosaki (Yui Hirasawa), Yōko Hikasa (Mio Akiyama), Satomi Satou (Ritsu Tainaka), Minako Kotobuki (Tsumugi Kotobuki), and Ayana Taketatsu (Azusa Nakano), even though it only lasted about half an hour.

The life-size statues recreate a live performance by the anime's Ho-kago Tea time band, complete with all of their musical instruments.

Sunday is also the birthday of the main lead Yui, so like many fans of K-ON did, Universal Studios Japan celebrated with cake. The park decorated a giant cake with Yui's "Gui-ta" guitar made of the strawberries, and the park's Beverly Hills Boulangerie bakery served birthday cake. For Sunday only, the park's Studio Stars Restaurant and Parkside Grill offered a Ho-kago Tea Time set with a five-chestnut Mont Blanc dessert, "Jun-chan's half-eaten donut," and a soft drink.

The Sunday festivities were actually a preview for the month-long "K-ON! in Universal Studios Japan" campaign. The campaign will run from November 28 through December 3, and people who purchase a special pass to the park will receive an original K-ON! six-sided puzzle.

During the campaign, the Studio Stars Restaurant will serve a Ho-kago Tea Time set with just a Mont Blanc and a soft drink. On weekend and holidays next month, there will be carts with strawberry-flavored popcorn in front of the outdoors Gramercy Park Stage for special events, as well as in front of Stage 18 with the life-size figures. The nearest LAWSON store turned itself into a K-ON! movie goods store. Finally, the roller coaster "Hollywood Dream: The Ride" will play the movie's ending theme "Singing!"

Are you going to be covering shipping costs for the Kindle? I mean, it can't be cheap with shipping it to certain places. 🤫

I doubt I'll be entering for it, but I'm interested on what members are going to be doing. 😝
