- How to install OpenVPN (nVPN) on Backtrack 5 full detailed high quality tutorial! - - Que - Dec 21, 2011 hey mates, i decided to make a tutorial about how to install nvpn openvpn on backtrack 5. In windows it is kind of easy: - installing - copy and paste config file - getting started on Linux it isn´t easy like this. There will be many little things which can really frustrade people who are new to linux. This tutorial show you how you get through this installation with many (maybe all) kind of rub. In this tutorial i will show you, how you can install nvpn (openvpn) in a very very easy way. What you will need? - NVPN (OpenVPN) Account of course? :) - Your Config file (download it from nvpn) - "Wine" on Backtrack 5 (it will be installed) - network-manager-openvpn Getting started on Backtrack 5. First of all install the network controller: Code apt-get install network-manager-openvpn(it maybe already installed) Than download NVPN (*.exe, YES Exe ^^) from here: http://support.nvpn.net/Knowledgebase/Article/View/141/31/where-can-i-download-openvpn open and Install it via "WINE". In Backtrack 5 Wine is already installed, if not: Code apt-get install wine If you ve done so far, you need to copy your config-files into the folder. i will show you 2 options how you can copy them: Code 1. cp ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/OpenVPN/config/your.ovpn ~/OpenVPN-Conf/your.ovpn1. There you copy "your.ovpn" file from the folder OPEN-VPN-Conf into the config Folder of the real OpenVPN 2. There you copy your "US.crt" file from the Folder OpenVPN into the config folder of the real Openvpn the path might me different so i will show you an easier way ^^ Second Way, Clicking Through: Program Files -> OpenVPN -> config and replace the Files with your config which you can download on nvpn within the client area. After you have successfull replaced the files you need to open the network connections and edit the vpn-connection like this. 1. Authentication Type: choose Password like above 2. Connection name: filled in automatically 3. Gateway: NVPN-Connection IP, can be found in the clientare of NVPN under Assigned IP 4. User name: NVPN username 5. Password: NVPN Password 6. CA Certificate: click on the symbol and follow like this: root -> .wine (if there won´t be a folder than press strg + h because it may be hidden) select it -> drive_c -> Program Files -> OpenVPN -> config -> US.crt (or which server you got) Than go to your Network Controller Applet (http://projects.gnome.org/NetworkManager/?x=22) and select your VPN connection. If there won´t be symbol than you have to make it visible: First,go to /etc/NetworkManager/ directory by this: 1. cd /etc/NetworkManager/ 2. Then, edit nm-system-settings.conf file: 3. sudo gedit nm-system-settings.conf 4. change “managed=false” into “managed=true” and save the file. 5.Finally,restart the network: /etc/init.d/networking restart finsihed! reboot and than enjoy your nvpn connection! I'm currently dual booting with a very small ubuntu 11.10 partition and I use BT5 and Blackbuntu in VM's. I plan to make a complete switch soon though. 👍 * - Coldfoot - Dec 31, 2011 You know its actually easier to do it all via command line? I'm making a video right now if anyone is interested * - Que - Jan 2, 2012 hey it depends on the knowledge and skill of the user who is trying to install it. If you search through the forums you will find many many user who can´t handle the commands and which appreciate a solution "windows" like. it´s more handy to use for someone who is new to linux. * - r3xr3h1s - Jan 9, 2012 I like your tutorial. I realize this is an old thread, but I'm having trouble installing nVPN on Backtrack5 r3. I followed this tutorial, but I'm getting an error when installing nVPN. It says "Unable to install TAP driver." Then when I go to connect, it says "Error opening registry key: SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/..etc." If anyone could help me with this, that would be awesome. Until then, I guess I will keep searching, searching, searching and trying. * - yesname - Dec 27, 2012 Same problem here "Unable to install TAP drive." And I have no System->Preferences->Network connections menu :( * - fakefiction - May 25, 2013 I must be missing something. followed until Network Connection, I don't have this option.
