Aircrack has a lot of documentation regarding this. There isn't a whole lot you need, as long as it supports packet injection. Most will do what you need

i would go for the alfa awus036h 1w with the RTL8187L chipset

in europ you can buy the alfa for 20-50 euro
depending on witch country you life
in the usa you can get it for 30-50 dollar

great compatibility in Aircrack and you can implement it in virtualbox easy =) also because it's a long range adapter you have a really big range and you can equip different antenna's to =)

The Alfa-AWUS036H is what I use most of the time.

It is long range using the included antennas and can be super long range(think miles) with certain directional ones. It has really good TX strength(especially important for injection and wifi cracking, like attacks using aireplay-ng and reaver) although it is initially nerfed by regulations, it can be used at full power illegally pretty easily. It's generally head and shoulders above the rest in those departments.

It has a couple of drawbacks, like it doesn't support N networks, the 9dbi antenna its shipped with occasionally fails, and last I knew it isn't supported by Kismet and a few other pieces of software.

But its the best I've used for sure.

Correct and just being always curious why that 9dbi antenna by alfa is so low quality in the end. Even the inbuilt 5dbi sometimes outperforms that.

I'm not sure. It can work sometimes, but you're right that the 5dbi antenna almost constantly out performs it. I am working on a few wireless projects, and am trying to find decent replacements for them.

Those antennas NEED A GROUNDPLANE!!
