Is it save to open PDF from stranger? - ToiletNinja00 - Jul 4, 2012 Is it save to open PDF from stranger? Can one inject some kind of virus/malware/keylogger into PDF these days? THanks * - -lSkillzl- - Jul 4, 2012 I don't know... they can spoof it or something so I wouldnt scan it on Virustotal so if it is a virus get it distributed and delete it. * - PoisonKnife - Jul 4, 2012 (Jul 4, 2012 10:25 AM)-lSkillzl- Wrote: scan it on Virustotal so if it is a virus get it distributed and delete it. Excatly. The person can have a virus bound to the PDF file and when you open the PDF, you'll be infected. * - ToiletNinja00 - Jul 4, 2012 Is Virustotal #1 standard these days? I thought on HF, we always discuss about creating FUD here and there, to bypass those stuff? Thanks * - z1lla - Jul 4, 2012 if the extension is PDF then it cannot be a virus..if it was binded with a virus its extension would be .exe.. * - creepshots - Jul 4, 2012 As above said, PDF can't execute code, Unless extension spoofed but there would be a EXE.PDF sort of extension. Its safe, Just watch the links inside the PDF. * - sɪᴍᴜʟᴀᴄʀᴜᴍ - Jul 4, 2012 I used to infect .txt files and .jpg files. Anything can be infected and you should treat it as such. * - Sky - Jul 4, 2012 Depends who sent you it, If its a stranger I wouldnt, Not hard to FUD & Bind these days, If you think or find it is a virus stick it on VirusTotal to get your own back :) Thats what I do when someone try's to RAT me. Payback is sweet. 🤝 * - ToiletNinja00 - Jul 4, 2012 (Jul 4, 2012 12:23 PM)sɪᴍᴜʟᴀᴄʁᴜᴍ Wrote: I used to infect .txt files and .jpg files. Anything can be infected and you should treat it as such. Ah thats true. I guess there really isnt 100% safety afterall. * - lindsaymills42o - Jul 4, 2012 The extension would need to be an exe, you can infect any file its just harder to find with a FUD so run the AV and give it a shot .. * - Sky - Jul 4, 2012 Maybe you could try find an online PDF reader? Just thought of this, Something like this should exist out there I guess? ~Arcane * - James Kirk - Jul 4, 2012 There are exploits to infect people that open you're pdf file, but chances are, yours is clean. * - Puller - Jul 4, 2012 well i reading something that stated that u could fake the exstension of a file with a unicode charcter so u should be careful and sandbox it first, but most likely it doesn't have any viruses * - ๖ۣۜÑåzgйŀ - Jul 4, 2012 (Jul 4, 2012 11:30 AM)ToiletNinja00 Wrote: Is Virustotal #1 standard these days? Well the goal of this site is for security. Without this site I would have a lot less knowledge of what happens on a computer I personally feel that to secure an environment you need to know how to break into it, if you can't break into it any longer, you're as secure as you're going to get. Though no system is completely secure, you can enable strong policy to maximize your security to the point that your computer no longer becomes an easy target. |
