External Harddrive Timeout/Freezing?! - Jessem - Sep 11, 2012 Hey guys, I have had my 1tb Seagate external going on about eight-teen months but the last few weeks have been a nightmare. It seems that the drive almost times out after a period of time, it doesn't respond and I have to turn off the power to get it to reboot. The problem with this crashing is that I can't seem to transfer files larger than, lets say 3gb without it just freezing up while copying and the windows transfer screen sitting there for days. Any ideas? It's out of warranty, and I'd rather check with you guys before I use it as a door stop. Thanks. * - Corso - Sep 11, 2012 Frankly, it's most likely failing. Transferring large files can eat up a HDD's lifespan. If I were you, I'd look into Spinrite or getting the Seagate Hard Disk Utility which analyzes the current state of the drive (good, bad, failing so forth). Then attempt repairs if needed. Also, when it freezes or slows down to a crawl - Check your Event Viewer in your Computer Management. Might show some insight on why, what errors the Windows System is receiving and logging and so forth. * - Logy - Sep 13, 2012 Do you have another computer you can hook it up to? I would look into hooking it up to a different pc and then running the Seagate DiscWizard. Hopefully it's not going to show up with any problems. Is this an IDE or SATA drive? * - Corso - Sep 13, 2012 Oh second time seeing post and thought to myself, see if you can see the device clearly in your BIOS and maybe try running it on uBuntu (you can run a uBuntu false install right off disk without actually installing it). That will tell you a lot of the items Spinrite would just not do much good on repairs in comparison. |
