Regarding customs tax - Tɦɛ Gʀiɱ - Mar 14, 2013

My friend in US wants to send me an item worth 850$. I am from India and so i will have to pay customs fees when i receive the item. Does anyone know how much it will be or is there any way to reduce the customs fees ?

When he ships the item. I would recommend DHL as they do most oversees. They will charge him customs fees and insurance which probably will be quite expensive. You could pay him for it via PayPal but he has to pay it before he ships the item.

Depending upon what it is that he wants to send you, you can find the associated customs charge by going to the official postal service site. They should have a list of items and their customs charge.

Can u link me to any one of sites like that?

Can you tell me the weight of the item and how big it is?

Tell him to just declare the item as a gift and you will not have to pay any customs tax. You can also declare the item worth anything you want. The lower you declare the item the less tax you will pay.

Are you personally sending him the item yourself?
If so, declare it as a gift and put a low value such as 20-50$, unless its a fucking truck tire lmao.

Customs is generally paid by the receiver.

This site is usually on point in their estimates: http://www.dutycalculator.com/

Also, depending on whether or not it's a common item, if you underdeclare the value of an item, they will just look up the price. Happened quite a bit to me when I was selling electronics, even though I said it was a gift.
