You'll most likely have to update your drivers - requires Internet

Upgrade to Windows 7 , support for XP Is being cancelled very soon

You'll either need access to the internet on the machine or a USB device to transfer data from. I've seen some use their phone, but more commonly people will download drivers on another PC and put them on a jump drive / USB Drive. Then you transfer them over and run the applications/driver installations.

To find the drivers, you can go to your laptop manufacturers website and find their Support section, which will normally have a Downloads or Drivers sub-section. In here, they will ask you to narrow down the exact device you're on or enter the serial/model into a search box.

Then you'll just need to download the drivers needed there.

Are you sure you want to install a 10 year old OS? If your laptop is slow you could try some Linux distros. They may be light but probably are more future proof than WinXP

If that laptop came with any CDs you might want to look through those to try to find some driver CDs. If you can't, direct connect your laptop via an ethernet cord to the internet and download drivers. Y

Also, you can try emmlongard's suggestion, but keep in mind linux might not work if its a shitty laptop. I have a Gateway laptop that tells me I have an incompatible chipset that won't work with the kernel.
