Is it worth it?
Would it just be better to use a VPN and have an extra box sitting at my house?

If you can afford it then yes i would suggest to get either windows server VPS or dedicated server. Because most of the times if your main internet disconnects or vpn disconnects or your pc automatically shutdown or restart because of updates. It will affect the slaves and with some slaves it will take alot of time to connect back to your rat. With VPS it won't be shutdown like your pc and its connection speed will be awesome.

Yeah a VPS can be good. You don't need a good one either. Max $10 each month can get you somewhere

Depends on what you are doing on the RAT? Are you just having fun and trolling or are you in it to make money?
If you're just trolling stick with the VPN and no VPS
if you're making money and your computer likes to shut down from updates get a VPS
I wouldn't recommend it, waste of money to me.
