Change search button limit - ‎Adam‎ - Aug 21, 2013

Hello,

I was wondering if the minimum amount of text that can be inputted is 3 instead of 4.

Here are some examples of when that would become useful.

If I searched for '143'

If I searched for 'Bot'

If I searched for 'Use'

If I searched for 'Lag'

If I searched for 'How'

There are many more examples.

I think the search button would be much more effective if we lowered the minimum to 3 characters instead of 4, for those reasons.

Thanks!

"Bot", "use", and "how" are all terms that aren't very specific at all. Searching for said queries will result in limitless variations of threads. Lag is a bit less vague, however still insufficient of a proper search, as lag can be applied to almost anything. The only thing here that would be an actual/valid search with unique results would be 143 (considering the fact that it's a group here), but it's rare that you can get three-word queries that will actually show such results.

Additionally, this has been suggested and denied before and I don't think it's going to happen.

But if you search "youtube bot", it will tell you that you need to have 4 characters in both words.

I don't mean those kind of generic queries, I mean if they are used in a search.

If you search 'How to get iOS 7" you get this error page too, a 3 character change would be nice.

I just searched that exactly as you typed it (without the quotations) and it worked fine. You need a minimum of three characters-- not three characters for each word.

That query also worked for me.

Yeah this has been suggested before a bunch of times.
Would like it to be implemented as well, hard to manually find anything in the title with "mlp".

Quote:Minimum Search Word Length
The minimum number of characters each word must be in a query. Set to 0 to disable this setting. For standard searching, there is a hard limit of 3, and for full text searching, there is a hard limit of 4. The hard limit will always override the set limit if the set limit is lower than the hard limit.

It would require going into an adjusting several things and I believe a custom plugin.
There is also a chance that searching three letter words would lead to a HUGE amount of results being brought up.
Now the issue of having a lot of results pulled up isn't the problem.
The set hard limit for results pulled up has to be managed so that the search result doesn't by default pull up thousands of hits over the past 5 years.

What does that matter tough, right?
Well, you will have results for 3 characters, but those 3 characters are much more likely to appear in posts, pulling up A LOT of irrelevant posts.
After you go through all the digging or modifying of the advanced options, it would just be easier to type in another word that you think would pull up the post/thread you are looking for.

Whether or not this is why Omni doesn't do this is beyond me, but it's been suggested and denied in the past.
