How to you manage to stay excellent student? - Delysid - Sep 8, 2013

Hello, I have a discussion for all of you excellent students, and those who want to be excellent.
Now, back when I was a kid I used to stand out from the crowd by being the "smartest" as in I studied the most. Teachers loved me and I used to be one of top notch students. Back in the day I used to really give effort to studying, and had recognition for it. But as my mentality and personality changed I went from being excellent student to barely any good. As I got more and more distracted from school because of my social life, the results were more than obvious, and they were bad. I am the third year of high school now (turning 18 next year), school have just started and I am determined to have excellent performance this year. Now it is a problem because last time I was an excellent student it was back in elementary school, the final year of elementary, and it was because professors mentality was "it's their last year, let's just shower them with good grades so they can get into good high schools", and not even in those conditions I could not get up to all A's in the end.
Now, high school is very different from elementary, it's more demanding and time consuming. Lessons are long and books are complex. I am into Law school by the way, and like 7 out of 11 subjects are law orientated(1 of them economics tho).

So, what is your routine that keeps you an excellent student HF? Can you please post your routines and ways to keep you focused and school orientated? You know what I mean..

NOTE: Keep in mind that school systems differ, so keep an open mind if something is not the same in your country/school.
Thank you all!

A few things I do:
1) I keep a written agenda of things I have to do. Physically crossing them off my list somehow keeps me motivated.
2) I set up a reward system: Doing x amount of studying allows me to do y when I finish.
3) I space out my studying. Studying one subject for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week is more effective than studying the same subject for 200 minutes in one session.

a) Free time. You'll be too stressed when you don't have any of it. Make sure to budget it wisely.
b) Serious time. After allotting yourself x amount of free time, give yourself y amount of work time. Please note that x should always be smaller than y (in most cases).
c) Write all of your homework down. Do it and take it seriously.
d) If you have a test, study for it. How you do so is up to you.

I respect, I study, I'm punctual & most regular student. That's the secret led me to be an excellent student since when I was 4 years old 🤝

I feel that there are two factors that for my 'success': passion and goals. Let me explain what I mean by those two things.

The passion for the program I am in and many of the courses I am taking are what drives me to get up in the morning, go to class, pay attention, take notes, and study. Even if it is a required class I don't particularly like, I still keep in my the big picture of doing well in that class only benefiting my passions.

Another factor, as I already mentioned, are goals. When I enrolled in school my first semester, I stopped going to classes and I failed miserably. I had a lot going on at the time that contributed to that, but I think the biggest reason was I had no idea what I was doing there. I had no goals to do well in school, or even to do well in my classes. I had no long-term career or educational goals that would necessitate I do well in my classes. Now that I have goals that necessitate this, I've become somewhat obsessed with doing well in school.

Also, you need to study. You should make use of your study time effectively too. Figure out what type of schedule works best for you.
