All I use is anti malware bytes and havnt gotten a virus in 4 years

If you're confident enough in your abilities to determine whether or not something is malicious then no, an anti-virus isn't necessary.

Anti-viruses are recommended for the normal or average PC user. Now with that being said, you must feel your ability to fend off threats to determine whether or not you need an anti-virus. I encourage you to take a look at this thread for some more information.

The best anti-virus will always remains the user's brain.

if you have a good knowlege about programming, computer and files then you dont need a antivirus.

i dont use it on windows 8, and still good as new

You do not need an AV, but it is recommended.
If you do not download files on a regular basis and all you do is surf the webz with your computer, you might aswell not install an AV.
I myself run 6-7 AV's 24/7 and I scan files on Virustotal and run them in Sandboxie on a VM. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

A great Coder and Hacker, like me :P can assume what a malware is and I am using no antivirus for 3 years, never got hacked or ratted.

* - znake - Oct 13, 2013

It is indeed necessary.
Modern AV's prevent scripts, web attacks, blocking malicious websites etc.

* - pretka - Oct 14, 2013

I'm not using any antivirus atm, but in windows 8 implemented defender only using default defender

* - NewbHacker62 - Oct 14, 2013

Idk, COMODO Firewall and ESET NOd32 are good to have..

No its not nessesarry
anti-viruses suck ass
BUT for blocking web attacks simply use add ons such as noscript https everywhere
and disable all plugins or use click to run
and if you CAN use sandboxie on your browser it really helps

also get a firewall
its usefull to have

if a virus comes on your computer you should have all the knowledge to detect one and remove one

your browser is where most of the attacks come from
scan your computer for vulnerabilities with bt5 or kali

Use an antivirus, better safe than sorry. Websites can get hacked, so sometimes even the most skilled brains can't classify it.
My AV recommendations are in my thread: https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=3804548

I use Security Essentials due to the fact that it came with Windows 8 and there's no reason for me to uninstall it, I might as well keep it. As long as you know what you're downloading you should be fine. Once you start downloading random things off "dodgy" websites, that's when you begin to encounter problems.
