Yagi antenna - GR33Nhax - Nov 7, 2013

Hi Guys,
I have been thinking of getting a 'yagi' antenna im just wondering if anyone has got one or something else to recommend
cheers in advance 👹

You may want to be a bit more specific mate. Yagi is only a type of antenna and just like car's there are some great one's, and then there's those cheap crappy one's.
At the end of the day it's also personal preference and your environment that determine what you will want.
I own several Yagi's and they are great for what I use them for.
Other times a simple Omni will suffice.
Horses for courses.

Yagi don't have so much signal gain. Get a panel or a parabolic one.

WiFi Yagi antennas are great, you just have to be precise when finding the AP.

Thanks for the reply's guys, i was a little broad i guess but im looking for one that will work nice with my RTL8187. There seems to be none in the 30dbm range does that matter if my card is set at 1W?

* - ciocan - Nov 9, 2013

No, it does not matter what power has your card.

24dbi grid is just about top of consumer grade line..

* - Rogers Communications - Nov 10, 2013

depends on the Grid.. there are cheap EBAY grid antennas and then there are professional grid antennas... big difference!

* - JackChitt - Nov 11, 2013

Think i got mine from NewEgg.. I dont know for sure. It was years ago and still serves me well to this day.

Cheap ebay grid antennas compared to commercial grid antennas = big difference!

The small grid antenna is an EBAY special!! the lower grid antenna is a commercial antenna!

the one on the bottom is what I use.. the top one is for garbage! ;)

Is it a directional antenna? How much networks do you pick up?

* - Rogers Communications - Nov 12, 2013

I pick up about 60-80 networks... most of them are to far to do anything with!

When I use an Omni antenna on the rood I pick up about 15-20

My grid is similar to the one on the top as far as the grid pattern goes but I do believe it is bigger based on the scale of your center pole. I dont think you have the 24dbi version.

The upper is polarized differently from the bottom. Are you trying to avoid noise?

* - Rogers Communications - Nov 13, 2013

I prefer the beam pattern this way! this comes after ALOT of testing ;)
Top one is polarized different as that was the last way I used it and tested it.. was unhappy with it, it didn't stay up long after I tested it thoroughly! I tried it vertical and horizontal etc etc... :(

And no, the top GRID antenna / Ebay special is as advertised a 24 DBi antenna, and still being sold today!

Here is a link to the commercial grid antenna I use.
http://www.calamp.com/component/content/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=248:130094-130135-parabolic-antenna&catid=67&Itemid=379

and the band I use it for is 2400-2483 MHz

The pic was just for reference as I was doing my pre-winter maintenance on my antenna farm! The pic does no justice as per size and quality of the two antennas.. showing the differences, as per cheap and commercial grade!
I just propped the Ebay special grid antenna above my parabolic to show the diff....

The pole the antennas are attached to is 2 inch which goes into my rotor box and thus a 2.5 inch mast.

and YES this ebay grid antenna is the same as yours.. its about 2-3 feet wide!

In closing.. if the commercial Parabola is a TRUE 24 dbi.. wonder what the Ebay parabola is then ;)

here is a link to the cheap ebay grid.. u get what you pay for
