Difference between programming and coding - Smexy - Jan 28, 2014

What difference is there actually?

This is not a troll thread, i'm actually wondering.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong:

-I've always thought that coding is a blanket statement; covering every type of language (HTML/CSS, Java, PHP, Python, etc).

-Programming, I've understood to apply only to languages that are making programs, (excludes HTML/CSS).

"Context defines meaning.

As mentioned already:

1. In general usage: the word coding means the entering or the putting of information into a system, almost always synonomous with either ciphering (like into a code, or the older word for reading and writing) - remember that decoding is the same as to decipher meaning from a less natural form, or entering information (just like typing / data entry). The word program (noun) means either a chronology of what is to occur (like a play's program or a print out of a computer program), or (verb) the act of issuing instructions that MUST be carried out (such as programming your VCR, or programming a brainwashed assasin to kill a target).

2. In the computer world in normal usage, they are perfect synonyms.

3. In the computer world some groups in some context choose to distinguish the words differently. Some consider coding to have connotations that imply a lighter, less planned nature, more like a hobbiest would do - as directly opposed to the types of programming your would be doing if you we're doing software engineering. In this context, the word programming would cover both of these acts and everything in between.

4. In another usage, people use the word coding in a derogatory manner, as in "he's just a simple coder" (implying they cannot design their own systems, but are more of a junior programmer).

Every group has their subgroups who use their own slang."

If you were to look at levels it would go like this. Programmer makes a programming language on which you code, in a really short terms.
Coding is using pretty basic languages most of them being web based one to make a code that the browser or server will interpret. While programming is much more advance and uses native programming outside the browser. Those are my looks and views.

Depends on person to person as there is no strict way to describe them.

There's no difference, the difference is what you make of it.

wait how does that even make sense?

OP, there is no difference, they mean the same thing.

OP there were already 2 threads regarding this subject - please use the search feature next time! My answer is in this one, and it was good enough that people agreed with it: https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=3922142&pid=36903477#pid36903477

I consider programmers to be those who can be told what the problem is and will come back at the end of the day with a progress report saying what has been accomplished and how much more time it will take until there is a fully functional software ready for deployment.

I would consider a coder to be someone who is told what to make and just writes code to achieve exactly what is specified. I don't consider coders to be problem solvers.

Programmers = those that get paid for what they write
Coders = those in their basement not getting paid

* - Qmz_ - Jan 29, 2014

To my knowledge they're just synonyms..

* - IRP_MJ_SCSI - Jan 30, 2014

Most people tend to see programming as writing programs and coding as anything that involves code (programming, scripting).

* - iVision - Jan 30, 2014

People who make a difference, get a dictionary? It are just synonyms.. Although I agree that to program/develop sounds more formal then to code but the words are just the same;)

Edit: qmz already said it are synonyms, didn't see that post, sorry
