[Tutorial] How to make a successful MyBB Forum w/ Plugins - Xorex - Jan 31, 2014 Hello everyone of the Hackforums Community. Today I am going to teach you how to setup a myBB Forum. I will divide this into a couple of chapters, and by each chapter I will go by and explain. Table of Contents Chapter 1 - Introduction to a MyBB Forum Chapter 2- Things required to make a MyBB Forum Chapter 3 - Getting Started Chapter 4 - Making the Forum Chapter 5 - Adding Plugins Chapter 1 - Introduction to a MyBB Forum -You might be asking yourself if you don't already know, "What is a MyBB Forum?". Well I have one answer that you can understand, the forum you are on right now is a MyBB Forum. As you can see this forums looks nice, easy to use, has a lot of plugins and looks fun. Well by the time you finish this tutorial, you will know how to set one up, add plugins, and more. Chapter 2 - Things required to make a MyBB Forum -Well to make a myBB Forum, you need a couple of things. They are all free, so don't worry! First - you will need the MyBB Installation itself. Go on here - http://www.mybb.com/downloads - and click Download Now. Second - you will need some kind of FTP Client, I prefer Filezilla. The link to download Filezilla is here - https://filezilla-project.org/ Third - you need a host - I suggest using SPAM if you are using this for fun/testing purposes. When you are ready to go pro, just buy a host. Fourth- you need determination. This is a really easy guide, though if you don't pay attention you might get lost really easily. Chapter 3 - Getting Started So let us get started. First go on SPAM.com and navigate to Login In/Register. Once you make an account, login, and go to your CPANEL. This is how your CPANEL shoud look like. Spoiler (Click to View) So you would want to first change the password to whatever you want, since they make a random default password. Once you done that, open up Filezilla, and type in your information. So as you see in the in the previous screenshot, those are the details I would type, and this is how it would look like. Spoiler (Click to View) Okay now go into the public_HTML folder, and delete whatevers inside of it. Now go to your unzipped MyBB installation folder, and open it. Go into the Installation folder, like here- Spoiler (Click to View) Now CTRL - A all the files, and drag them over to FileZilla, into the Public HTML folder. Like this - Spoiler (Click to View) Now wait for everything to upload. Once done, move onto the next Chapter. Remember to overwrite files if it asks you too. Chapter 4 - Making the Forum So once everything is done uploading, go to your Website link, and add /install at the end. For example since my link is - xorexhftut.netii.net, I would do - xorexhftut.netii.net/install Once done that, this should pop up- Spoiler (Click to View) Now click next, and next again, and next again. When Database Configuration pops up- Spoiler (Click to View) So now create the Database and go back to the MYBB Installation. When filling it out, make sure you look at this link at your CPANEL. Spoiler (Click to View) So now it should look like this - Spoiler (Click to View) Click Next, click Next again after Table Creation. Keep clicking Next until you get to Board Configuration. I would not suggest touching anything except, Forum Name & Admin Email, leave everything else alone. Spoiler (Click to View) Click next, and create your Administrator Account. Once you've done everything, this should pop up- Spoiler (Click to View) Congratulations, you have created your Forum! * - Southern Proper - Jan 31, 2014 This is a very high quality tutorial! I just got done talking to a guy about making his first forum! Will definatly edit my post and link him to this thread! Good job Xorex! * - Xorex - Jan 31, 2014 Chapter 5 -Adding Plugins So once you have your Forum setup, I would suggest adding some simple plugins that would help. You could get a whole range of plugins from - http://mods.mybb.com/ Today I am going to show you how to install the Awards Plugin. It's not the one that Omnmiscient developed, it's a different one. The one I'm showing you, is this one - http://mods.mybb.com/view/ougc-awards So download that one, and extract it. So now head back to Filezilla, and quick connect again. Once you're in, this is what we're going to do. Go to the OUGC Awards Folder, click it, and click images. So in Filezilla, navigate to the Images folder, and drop OUGC Awards Folder in. Spoiler (Click to View) Now go back to public_html and go to inc. Then from inc go to Plugins. Now in the Awards Folder you downloaded, find the inc folder, click it, and go to the Plugin Folder. Spoiler (Click to View) Open it, and drag the OUGC Awards Folder, into the Plugins under Inc in Filezilla. Then do the same with the PHP File. Then go back to public_html and drop the last two PHP files in. Spoiler (Click to View) Now go back to your Forum, and go to Admin Panel. Spoiler (Click to View) Login , your Details are your Forum Details when you made an Administrator Account. Now go to Configuration tab and click Plugins. Spoiler (Click to View) Now, you will the plugin "OUGC Awards" click Install and Activate. Then this should pop up - Spoiler (Click to View) Now go to Users and Groups tabs, and you will see Manage Awards at the end. Spoiler (Click to View) Click it, and now click Add. So if you want a custom image, go download one, (I'll be using the HF Awards). Now if you want an image, go to your public_html in FileZilla. Go to Images > Then OUGC Awards. Spoiler (Click to View) Upload the image, you want, but make sure you remember what the extension and name is. So I will upload one - Spoiler (Click to View) So I uploaded Wings.JPG, now I'll go back to MyBB and fill this out. So now fill this in- and you can see that I typed in Wings.jpg because that's what the exact file is called. Just Wings.jpg you don't need to type in the directory. Spoiler (Click to View) Now click Submit and you should see your Award. Click Options then Give. Spoiler (Click to View) Now type in the Username you want to give it to - Spoiler (Click to View) Click Submit, now go back to your Forums. Now you'll see you got a PM, and when you click it, it'll show - Spoiler (Click to View) Cool huh? Though maybe you don't want the Award to be delivered from MyBB System, maybe you want it from yourself. So to do that, go back to Admin Panel, and click the Configuration Tab. Scroll down to OUGC Awards. Spoiler (Click to View) And click on it. Now you can edit how many awards can the person have on their profile, and who it will send the awards from. So I want it from me, so I do this. Spoiler (Click to View) Now click Save Settings, and lets test it. So I'll make a new award and give it to myself. ! See now it says this - Spoiler (Click to View) So this is the end of my tutorial. I will be adding a lot more, just wanted to show this. Thank you for reading it, and it took me a long time to write this. Please leave feedback! Thank you * - overtake - Jan 31, 2014 Thats a lot of effort you put right there. A list of good plugins would be nice, also suggest you talk about how you don't want to stack on plugins because it slows down the forum along with knowing which plugin isn't vuln. * - Xorex - Feb 1, 2014 (Feb 1, 2014 01:12 AM)iHydra Wrote: The very basic stuff that you talked about is on MyBB's Help Docs. Yeah right now, I'm working on some crucial plugins, and how to make sure your new theme works with the plugin theme. I just wanted to show how to basically make a forum since sometimes it's very confusing, and I gave a really basic installation guide, that works. |
