What do you think the education system is missing? - Hipster Ariel - Feb 7, 2014

Yes, I am one of those who think the education system is outdated.
There various things I feel schools should be teaching and they're not, I'll list some examples. (I am referring to school before college)

I feel normal subjects that are nowadays in the system should only be taught to the level that it is needed in normal real life situations. I am talking about math, biology, physics, english and basic subjects among these.
Instead I think schools should focus more in teaching other subjects I'll list some ideas I think should be taught in schools.
Real life problem solving, sure I know how to find X in an equation, but will someone please tell me how to open a bank account, how to change a tire, someone please explain me how to solve all these problems that may come to me in a real life situation, sure some people would say it is your parents job to teach you all of these, but lets be honest parents forget or sometimes are just too lazy to teach, I mean at least 70% of my friends don't know how to do basic life stuff that will some day be a problem to them, and I don't know if they're stupid but that's how it is.

There should be at least a subject teaching you basic economics, how does the stock market work?, what are taxes, how is economics important to the world. It is a subject that surrounds the entire world, like maths and physics but still there's little to no information in schools about it, at least at the basic level of education.

Other subjects that I think should be greatly amplified are technology related subjects.
In all those years you waste in computer class, image if they teached you how to code a basic website or a basic application, or just how a coding language works, it is something that is useful for everyone no matter what their career of choice is. And I am not talking about hard stuff, but how many years have you had computer education? or people teaching you how to use word, because I am sure in all that time people could actually learn at least html, css and the basics of java script, hell I learned html and css in a month 🤐 not fully but again, a month.

How does a computer work? what is a computer made of?
yeah I am buying a new graphics card for my pc..."a what" your friend screams, damn Yosh you're such a geek.

Moving on, I think there should be more psychology subjects, with the rate of people that suicide in schools, I am not sure if it would save thousands of people but by just helping one that's a win, I think there should be more subjects focused on the kids mind and well being, and I am talking real subjects not those fill out hours you get once a week because your school doesn't even know what else to teach.

I also feel there should be a more personalized program for each person, I mean I want to study I don't know...Graphic Design let's say, and I already took a year of biology, please I don't want to keep learning how plants reproduce, give me art history or geometry instead please.

These among other ideas I think could improve the schools, I don't know if I am correct but that's what I feel.
What do you guys think? are schools outdated?

tl;dr: NO

I didn't read all of this, but seeing the title:

I think the education system doesn't prepare us for life, but rather just university or college. We should be taught more how to handle tough situations, how to get through things, and basically just be more prepared for the challenges life will bring us.

Instead, we study a bunch of bullshit nobody will ever use in their lives.. y=mx+b my ass

I think the problem is making students learn.
If I leave a spoon on a table with a note "TAKE THIS SPOON" would you take it? Probably not unless you needed it. What about if I left a note that said "DO NOT take this spoon"? Hell yeah, I might need it in the future and it'll make someone mad. -(Thoughts of a high school student :P )

The no child left behind thing, in my opinion, is crap. Sure we should give everyone an equal chance, but how many students are going to take that chance and *Throw it on the ground*?

One of my favorite teachers quote- "I've never met a student who wanted to learn... who didn't"

Most of the stuff like changing a tire, welding, using MS Word and stuff like that is taught at a Vocational Tech offered at my school and we only have a campus of 80 people per grade.

Then again, does the government really want a bunch of smart, intelligent people running around? No... they want them dumb so they can tax them and sell them things.

I used to love school when I was in middle school. When I hit High School, I realized I could learn a massive amount of information and surpass my teachers' knowledge if I wanted to EASILY. In fact, I could probably have like 3 degrees by now if I would've spent the time on the internet instead of school. Then again, Social interaction is very important.

The only thing that gets on my nerves is Busy Work

are education system is only teaching but the students are the ones willing to learn.

* - Mr.Peanut - Feb 7, 2014

It is outdated...

1. Letting the state choose what we learn is a terrible idea to a certain extent..
2. Teachers who lecture/give tons of papers/ have no real drive or passion
3. Outdated technology to help us learn
4. No real world connections.. Make us want to learn

I could go on and on...

The education system is shit because of feminism. They force you to take retarded courses (like gender studies) and they cater to women too much. Boys are dropping out of school and becoming the minority voter.

Women have successfully taken over. Soon it will be illegal for boys to go to school. I suggest you educate yourves while you can before its too late.

It's missing actual specialized classes, things like no student left behind absolutely destroyed the system.

🙃 please don't. Sorry but your comment makes no sense, I don't see why they would make it illegal for boys to go to school and how it is all because of feminism.

now a days education system is like pressure cooker ,pressure keeps on increasing as we move upward.

Too much time and money is being spent on teaching subjects like history and art. Schools need to focus more on English and Sciences/Maths. Schools also need to get kids hooked on learning, explain to them why it's important to learn math, and what kind of careers can come out of it. Make it fun, hands on, and spend time with the children/students. Educators need to realize that every kid has a different learning style, and it's their duty to cater to them. Lets not make a second language a requirement to graduate shall we? Instead lets let the students decide which courses they would like to pursue and help them achieve their goals, goals that will help them with their careers.

I think one of the only problems with the education system is the teachers. However, I don't blame them, as it's hard to like a job in which you can barely make a living. I think the first step would be to increase the funding of schools. I also think that instead of just teaching the material, they should teach why the material is relevant.

* - Patelka333 - Feb 8, 2014

students that want to actually learn and teachers that want to teach.

* - Stuffn - Feb 8, 2014

yes, I totally agree with your post!
I think we waste so much time on stuff that really isn't that important. Sure I think we should learn some math, science,history etc but damn to they drag that shit on for to long! When I'm at school I literally feel like I'm wasting valuable time in my life that I could be learning something useful.

This is something that people don't even pay attention to but is a really big problem I think. Glad to see other people feel the same way as myself.

The education is a business and therefore, this post's ideas mean nothing to anyone of position within the education system. I agree that the system is undoubtedly lacking; however, once you're out of high school education is more about money than anything else.

Furthermore, I completely agree that the system is outdated. For example, just about every bit of logic would side with making unviersity-style homework internet based for certain (most) classes obviously excluding mathematics-based classes. Why haven't we made the step towards eBooks and online classes? Because printing books is more profitable. If the school did not buy then resell books, they would lose revenue and would therefore become a university based on education... and those don't exist in anyone's wildest dreams.

I believe the school systems nowadays are lacking financial education, I recommend people reading the book "Rich Dad Poor Dad" it teaches you alot as well as to think from a different mind set
