[Advice] To everyone using Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) - Aura - Feb 17, 2014 Hey guys, Aura here with a little recommendation for you. I know that a good number of members here uses Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) as their main protection against viruses and malwares. Yes, MSE was once at the top and was one of the best security solution you could get. But not a long time ago, the support for Microsoft Security Essentials eventually stopped and Microsoft now recommends you to use another Antivirus instead to ensure a maximum protection of your system. I'm posting this because a lot of people seems to not be aware that MSE's days are over. Articles : http://thundercloud.net/infoave/new/microsoft-security-essentials-its-official-microsoft-says-you-should-use-something-else/ http://www.howtogeek.com/173291/goodbye-microsoft-security-essentials-microsoft-now-recommends-you-use-a-third-party-antivirus/ http://lifehacker.com/microsoft-admits-that-third-party-antivirus-is-more-eff-1441135677 In short, Microsoft Security Essentials is now used as a "base Antivirus", which means that everything they gathered via MSE will be shared with other Antiviruses companies in order to help them create a stronger Antivirus protection for the consumers. You can discuss about the subject here if you want. * - Fafaffy - Feb 17, 2014 I was not aware of this fact at all. Oh well, it's a good thing I don't visit shady sites with driveby's or download suspicious crap (if I do, simply Sandboxie w/ restricted internet permissions ftw) * - Aura - Feb 17, 2014 (Feb 17, 2014 08:45 PM)Fafaffy Wrote: I was not aware of this fact at all. That's a good pratice. Personally, I have an isolated (no sharings) Windows 7 VM where Avast! free, Comodo Firewall, Malwarebytes and Sandboxie are installed. And if I have to download a file from a source I don't know or I don't trust, I do it through that VM and scan/analyze it before actually downloading it on my host machine. * - Weebex - Feb 18, 2014 Being a proud member of MSE makes me sad. Just uninstalled MSE and got Avast Free * - Aura - Feb 18, 2014 (Feb 18, 2014 04:06 PM)BlueTigerSlayer Wrote: Being a proud member of MSE makes me sad. I cant get the voices to go off, its scary D: * - Corso - Feb 19, 2014 MSE / Microsoft shares their definitions with many companies... They don't even recommend using their AV but wanted to have some option out there for people. This alone states it all, they are just trying to cover their ass a LITTLE but still are saying GET AN ANTIVIRUS FOR REAL. * - Aura - Feb 19, 2014 (Feb 19, 2014 08:00 AM)Corso Wrote: MSE / Microsoft shares their definitions with many companies... Sometimes, Microsoft's solutions for Windows are not always the best solutions. 🙂 * - CRYP7 - Feb 19, 2014 Time to install Eset ... that shit detects new malware so fast! * - Aura - Feb 19, 2014 (Feb 19, 2014 02:45 PM)CRYP7 Wrote: Time to install Eset ... that shit detects new malware so fast! Kaspersky > ESET 🤫 But it's a matter of opinion 🙂 * - webdev77 - Feb 19, 2014 On 8.1, I'm good with just Windows Defender (aka old MSE). I've had no issues with malware thus far and don't think I'm going to since I'm rather careful about what I choose to run. * - Gustav. - Feb 19, 2014 Was aware of this for some time now. MSE shouldn't even be considered as an antivirus for that exact reason, and many more. * - Aura - Feb 19, 2014 (Feb 19, 2014 02:58 PM)webdev77 Wrote: On 8.1, I'm good with just Windows Defender (aka old MSE). MSE, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, all of them shouldn't be considered as Antiviruses. I don't know why people think the opposite. * - CRYP7 - Feb 19, 2014 (Feb 19, 2014 02:53 PM)Aurа Wrote: Kaspersky > ESET 🤫 I couldn't agree or disagree because they're both amazingly good. :) * - Gustav. - Feb 19, 2014 (Feb 19, 2014 03:18 PM)Aurа Wrote: MSE, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, all of them shouldn't be considered as Antiviruses.
