How do/did you stay on top of homework? - CyanideRS - Feb 20, 2014

I'm currently a sophomore in high school, up until this year, school has been a breeze for me. Last year I had a 3.89 GPA but this year I'm not doing so well. I'm a decent student and I've tested well enough to take any dual enrollment class at the local community college next year, while still in high school. Which means I can earn my associates degree at the same time I'm receiving my high school diploma. My problem this year is I'm buried up over my head in homework, so much I work on it all evening and still aren't able to complete it all which has caused me to prioritize which classes I think are the most important and do their homework first.

Currently, I have one essay to write and another to write my intro and three body paragraphs for English, 3 sections of an Economics course that is mainly online to complete (each section is roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour long), a packet of 40 Algebra 2 problems, and 70 AP European History history questions plus a DBQ. (Basically another essay.) All of this is due tomorrow. I have a A's in AP Euro and Economics, a D in Algebra, and an F in English. I score A's on tests in all classes, my grade is just terrible in two due to the amount of homework that I haven't turned in. None of my teachers will accept late work either.

So, any helpful suggestions?

Do some of your homework in school, learn to do work faster, or lessen your course load.

Our principal has decided to not let anyone change their classes just because they don't feel like they can complete the work or don't like the teacher. If I ever complete my Algebra 2 homework it's because I do during lunch which is right before that class. The teachers at my school are pretty much complete assholes and some will take your homework if they catch you working on it during their class.

I'm in the same position, but I'm a senior and with close to 81 days left of school I freaked out.

I only have 4 classes total,
Application Development
English
Computer Science AP
Physics

and out of those I'm only passing App Dev and CS AP.. I've taken state tests and what not saying I'm proficient in English at a college level, my only problem is not doing the work.

My advice to you to get your grades up, which is what I'm starting to do now.
Ask your teachers for any extra credit, show that you're willing to try and mean it. They love that shit apparently..
I get home around 3:30-4, as soon as I do that I go straight to doing my work till dinner. Eat dinner, take a break till I get ready for bed and work on my homework till I fall asleep. Take any free time you can to do work, but give yourself a breather here and there. To much work can actually be really bad and stress you out.

Just know if you actually try and show to your teachers/councilors that you're willing to try, most likely they'll be more likely to throw you a bone and maybe even give the class a day or two with no work.

Good luck man,
Class of 2014

P.S. Good tip I learned from reddit, if you listen to Video Game music (nothing like battle music) it may even help you stay focused and relaxed. The music is meant to be more ambient and not distract the user, so apply it to your working time. I have a playlist with a mix of video game music and for some breaks during my study time I added in some punk, rap and alternative. I'd put it on Spotify, but I'm sure half the music isn't on there.. I'll attempt to make one later and PM or post it here if I can. Here's a link to a playlist made in the comments of the post I read.

Set up a solid schedule for yourself and utilize any and all free-time you have. When I was in high-school I was doing a similar thing to you and would follow the same routine daily which was
Get home at 5:00PM, Eat/Shower.
6:00PM-12:00AM- Homework. No stopping, just keep knocking it down. (Obviously, I'd go to the bathroom and stuff when needed.)
I had to wake up at 6:00AM to prepare for school, but on heavy work-nights I'd wake up 5:00AM, Take my shower and all that good stuff and then sit and do as much homework as I could until I had to leave the house. I took the train to school so generally, once on the train I'd pull out my notebook and do whatever else I had to do.
I always did my homework according to my class-schedule so, I'd do first periods work first, then second, third, etc. Then during those periods if I was a solid-student I would do course-work for my other classes. If you do this, I can guarantee you'll get your homework done on time, though you will be sacrificing your social-life a bit and it will not be a fun week by any means, but believe me when the weekend comes around you'll feel GREAT, and when you graduate you'll feel even better.

Good luck OP, I wish you the best.

Unlike everyone else on this thread, I just don't do most of my homework, and get A's/B's in all of my classes. If you ever really have to do it, just do t during lunch, or other classes.

Unlike every solution given in this thread that are basically well-known solutions there are still better things to do to increase your volume of work done and shorten the amount of time spent on doing same amount of work.

I will create a small Problem - Solution scheme so you can understand fast what I am saying.

Your problem looks like: A lot of work, not enough time.

Solutions:
1. Do the work faster.
2. Increase your time.

Now let's figure out how can you get the results you want.

1. Do the work faster.

For increasing your speed in solving the homework you have you can do a lot of tricks as well other things to do your homework faster.

Trick no. 1: Take a psychological test and determine what is your kind of intelligence from the types of intelligences. After you have done that adjust your learning to your type of intelligence. For example if your intelligence is visual learn through making diagrams, if it's musical register yourself reading a lesson and after that read and listen to the lesson at the same time. You can find a lot of tests on the internet.

Trick no. 2: Eat sweets - glucose is one of the most powerful energy booster when you are learning. Eat different kind of sweets when learning you will feel way more active than before.

Trick no. 3 (Coffee Trick): If you have no problem in drinking coffee or black tea do the following. Buy lecithin pills and take a lecithin pill and after that drink fast a cup of coffee or black tea. This trick is very useful because lecithin improves your memory and coffee/black tea increases your energy. The combination gives you a very good result and you can increase your speed in doing homework for like 25-30%. I tested this and works perfectly.

Trick no. 4: Binaural brainwaves, you can increase your attention and speed in doing brain tasks by doing 2 things that I know and tested and work perfectly:

1. Listen to this or similar music while doing homework:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNC6nZa8VRs

2. Overclock your brain! - Search for I-Doser over the internet get the Brain+ QH dose (10 mins length). Lay in bed cover your eyes with something to be completely in the dark listen to the dose and concentrate on the sound. After that you will work a lot better and you will feel like your brain is able to learn faster

I tested Brain+ QH as well and to my results I did an IQ test w/o listening to it and one after listening to it. I got like 6 points increase after I listened to Brain+.

So first part done.

2. Increase your time

Trick no. 1: Time management. Create a schedule that you will follow strictly and find what can you do to improve your working time to do the homework.

Trick no. 2: Insert small breaks. When learning/doing homework work like this. Study for 25 mins and take 5 mins break than 25 again and 5 break. Doing this it will help your brain taking breaths here and there so you can work longer.

Trick no. 3: Polyphasic sleep. First do a search on the internet to know what it is then you can choose to follow my schedule and you will gain like 2-3 hrs bonus from each day.

Day length: 24 hrs.

Normal people:
- sleep a big chunk for 8 hrs, if they sleep less they will sleep more in the weekend so time remains almost the same
- are awake for 16 hrs

Polyphasic sleeping people:
- sleep in small chunks gain more hrs and can mantain the same sleep during the weekend easily.
- are awake 18 hrs at least

My schedule:

16:00 - 16:20 (Take a nap)
19:00 - 19:20 (Take a nap)
23:00 - 23:20 (Take a nap)
Nap time: 1 hr asleep

Sleep: 03:00 - 07:30 - 4.5 hrs

Total Asleep: 5.5hrs of sleep
Total Awake: 18.5 hrs

I'm doing this for like 5 months now and I don't feel exhaustion or something like that at all even though I stay awake for more than 18 hrs. And I'm doing it each day including weekends.

Trick no. 4: Sleep in cycles. During sleep brain still works but in cycles of 90 minutes than it calms and takes another round and so on. If you manage to sleep in 90 minutes cycles you will feel way better when you wake up than rather waking up in the middle of a cycle.

For example: I sleep for 4.5 hrs at night = 270 minutes = 3 full cycles and I'm waking up right after last one. I always feel like after a baby sleep.

To adjust your sleep for cycles determine how many cycles you want to sleep and then multiply number with 90 and the result will be the number of minutes and you can calculate your waking up moment easily. There are also a lot of apps on the internet and phone to calculate that.

ex: No Of Cycles x 90 = Amount Of Sleep Time

***NOTE: I tested all of this and I'm regularly using all the techniques written here with amazing results rather than other people and friends that are sometime way behind me.

I stayed on top of my homework by turning off my computer xD
