What's with the rap's world obsession with top 5 top 10 GOAT etc - Chrazy - Mar 27, 2014
All rap forums & debates & stuff always circle around who is the best, who is the best now. Who is the best of all time. Rappers themselves always make lists, talk of being in the top 5 or top 10 or being the best.
I never heard Mariah Carey singing im the top 5 singers of all time. I never see pop fans saying this guy is in the top 10 of pop. Now and then people talk about being one of the best, but that's about it & usually it's in a reference to music in general. The only exemption is probably Michael Jackson & his kick of pop reference.
Rap in my opinion makes itself look stupid with all this stuff. It's all subjective anyway. Some people prefer biggie some people prefer pac. Today some prefer Jay Z some prefer someone else. Most white people prefer Eminem etc etc. There's no definitive list & it's all relatively pointless.
I was listening to a Game record ft Kendrick i think & he again started babbling about being top 10 or even better top 5. And he could hold it down vs the best of them. If so why did you need to tell people? Surely it'd be obvious. To me it exposes the lack of education more than the ego.
Everyone knows Lil Wayne is #1 anyway.

Hip hop is the most popular and trendy music genre right now, the shit that appeals to most people is the braggy and cocky shit. And put it this way, if you were one of the best rappers, wouldn't you brag about it? They're proud of themselves.
Also, if it relates to the song, why not add it in there? Usually when they say that type of shit, its because they've added it into their album, and they're trying to hype their album.
Saying your top 5, also proves your creditabilty with music, if your the best, you know your shit.
Edit: Also I find it a bit ironic that you used Mariah Carey as your example, because she is one of the most cocky female artists. Listen to 'Obsessed' shes full of herself.
