Tapped into landline - JarvanIV - Apr 2, 2014 Around 5 years ago, my parents had this baby monitoring device ( the one they put in little babies room to hear when they are crying 😁 ). So one day i was playing with the receiver and i plugged it in the wall, suddenly i started hearing random people talking. I could only hear one side of the conversation ( could not figure out if it was the caller or the recipient) , and when the convo ended i get hooked up on another convo until i close the device. I somehow tapped on the land line. I don't remember of what brand the device was. Could someone explain how that happened ? Thank you J4 * - DaRkReD - Apr 2, 2014 Most likely faulty wiring in the home. * - d3agle - Apr 2, 2014 This happened for me as well, when I was younger, I heard a one-way conversation from a baby monitor device, the speakers must operate on the exact same frequency as the signal traveling through the wires, but like DaRkReD said, most likely faulty wiring. * - JarvanIV - Apr 2, 2014 I'm going to look more into it and will keep you guys updated if anything new comes up. J4 * - DaRkReD - Apr 2, 2014 Basically your baby monitor operates on 2.4ghz which is pretty common and unregulated. Other things that run on that band like wifi, microwaves and some cordless phones. Your neighbour had a shitty unencrypted cordless home phone and you were listening in. RTL-SDR or HackRF and you are gold * - JarvanIV - Apr 2, 2014 Okay here is what I have found out. DaRkReD was right, cordless home phones operate on the frequency of 2.4 GHz and that same bandwidth was allocated for baby monitors. So both of them operate at the same frequency. And these phones were still analog at that time so no security whatsoever. Living in a building with many neighbors must have been the reason why i was able to pick-up conversations. I'm going to try to build something similar to that baby monitor receiver and check out if i can get anything :) J4 |
