[Review] Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo (WIP - Revising this review) - Dragon. - Apr 10, 2014 Introduction Over the years, the anime industry has become saturated with shows that abuse typical character archetypes, rely on conveniently placed and poorly executed plot devices, and to top it all off, have loads and loads of fan service. The romance/comedy/slice of life genres are no exception to this rule. Does Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo go above and beyond that of its peers? Or does it join the countless others in its genre that have become the epitome of anime production? Story Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, which will be referred to from this point on as Sakurasou, revolves around Kanada Sorata, whose kindness lands him in what is considered the "looney bin" of the school - a dilapidated dorm called Sakurasou. The story is a slice of life/romantic comedy that follows Sorata and the other main characters, as they gripe with the curveballs life throws at them. I started watching this show after I had just finished Toradora! I had been looking for a show similar to it, and at the top of the recommendation page of MAL at the time was Sakurasou. When I first started watching this show, it seemed really childish. It looked like the story was going absolutely nowhere; however, for some reason, I kept watching it, despite being pushed away by its zaniness. After a few episodes, the viewer soon discovers that Sakurasou isn't what it makes itself out to be. The show's focus becomes more defined, and so do the characters. Characters Initially, all the characters appear to conform to your typical anime stereotypes. We have the dandere, the tsundere, the crazy chick, the player, and our boring protagonist. I have to give props to the creators of this story. They were able to develop the majority of the characters, focusing on each and every one of their faults, weaknesses, strengths, and shortcomings as people. As a result, we're met with an extremely realistic cast whose internal struggles resonate with the viewer. It is for this reason that the show scored such high marks for me. 9/10 Music/Art For a story about art, the animation needs to be good. Sakurasou doesn't just deliver average animation. Each frame, background, character design, and even the color palettes are elegantly planned and beautifully drawn. 10/10. The sound isn't any worse, if not better. Sakurasou's soundtrack consists of a variety of percussion and string instruments that portray each dramatic/funny scene perfectly. 10/10. Conclusion Failure is a part of life. Without it, we will never grow and develop as people. Sakurasou excellently portrays this. We see all of our main characters fail because of their shortcomings. Brilliantly executed and beautifully told, Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo is a show that hits deep. A show that makes you feel for each of the characters, and a show that runs your emotions rampant toward its second half.
