[TUTORIAL] INSTALL AND USE OMNICOIN-QT - VirusTotal - Apr 20, 2014 Read this before: OMNICOIN VOCABULARY - Some Omnicoin words you might hear INSTALLATION:
DOWNLOADOmnicoin-Qt is the default client for the Omnicoin network. The latest download of Omnicoin-Qt can be found here. There are executables for all platforms including Windows and Mac. Go ahead and download your version, and install it. If you have and problems during this guide with Omnicoin-Qt you can ask for help on #omnicoin on IRC. If you don't have an IRC client use webchat here. EXTRACT Once downloaded, navigate to the downloaded file and extract the file contents. This can be done by right clicking the file and selecting "Extract Files" ![]() Once extracted, navigateto the Omnicoin folder and open OmniCoin-qt.exe ![]() You should be presented with a splash screen: ![]() SYNC It will take a few minutes when first running the software. You should be then presented with something like this: ![]() WAIT Omnicoin-Qt now has to do is catch up to the rest of the Omnicoin network. Its downloading and verifying the Blockchain, which is the public record of all the Omnicoins and transactions ever. It is going to take ~1 hour to fully sync on a normal connection, but thankfully you will only have to do this once. Take this time to go outside and toss a frisbee. Or if outside is too scary, you can read more about Omnicoin from these places:
FULLY SYNCED Ah, your back! Omnicoin-Qt is fully synced when the green progress bar disappears, and there is a small checkmark in the bottom right hand corner. It should look something like this: ![]() HOW TO USE OMNICOIN-QT:
CREATE AN ADDRESSYour wallet will automatically have your first omnicoin address in the "Receive Coins" tab. ![]() If you need more addresses click the "New Address" button. You can create as many addresses as you like and add a label for each address for easy reference.
RECEIVE OMNICOINS To receive Omnicoins you just have to click on your Address and click "Copy Address". ![]() SEND OMNICOINS To send Omnicoins you just have to click on "Send Coins" tab and insert the recipient address, a label (optional) and the amount of OMC. ![]() SECURITY TIPS:
ENCRYPT THE WALLETThis step is optional, but is highly recommended. It helps prevent someone from accessing your private keys should they steal your wallet. Go to Settings >Encrypt Wallet and insert a passphrase. Note: After encrypting wallet, it will not ask you for the password whenever you start the program. It will only ask for the password whenever you try to withdraw/send Omnicoins. ![]() PRINT PRIVATE KEYS Each Omnicoin address has a private key associated with it, the private key is required to send Omnicoins from the address to another address. You should keep a copy of your private keys on paper (paper wallet) and store it somewhere safe. You can later use your paper wallet to restore your wallet, should you lose your wallet file. Go to Help>Debug Window>Console and type: Code dumpprivkey your-omnicoin-address![]() ![]() The private key will be displayed in the debug window. Repeat for each address. Copy the results to notepad and print. Delete the notepad file! MOVE YOUR WALLET OFFLINE - BACKUP YOUR WALLET The wallet file contains the private keys we just printed for your Omnicoin addresses. As mentioned, these are required in order to send Omnicoins. If anyone obtains this file they can steal your coins. Encrypting the file will help in preventing someone from accessing the private keys, but the best way is to take the file offline!
TROUBLESHOOTING:
OUT OF SYNC - WALLET NOT SYNCINGThere are a couple possible fixes for this.
Code rpcuser=userIn fact, running it with server=1 is less secure than not doing it, as that starts the RPC server) Save this as omnicoin.conf and drop this into: Windows: %AppData%\Omnicoin (Expanded to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Omnicoin Usually) Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Omnicoin/ Linux: ~/.OmniCoin
EDIT omnicoin.conf All command-line options (except for -datadir and -conf) may be specified in a configuration file, and all configuration file options may also be specified on the command line. Command-line options override values set in the configuration file. The configuration file is a list of setting=value pairs, one per line, with optional comments starting with the '#' character. The configuration file is not automatically created; you can create it using your favorite plain-text editor. By default, Omnicoin (or omnicoind) will look for a file named 'omnicoin.conf' in the Omnicoin data directory, but both the data directory and the configuration file path may be changed using the -datadir and -conf command-line arguments. Here is a sample omnicoin.conf file: Code # omnicoin.conf configuration file. Lines beginning with # are comments.OFFICIAL NODES List of official nodes to add (optional): Code addnode=204.44.122.123POINTS TO REMEMBER

The file should be in the following locations in Windows and Linux respectively: - Windows users: C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Litecoin\wallet.dat - Linux users: /home/[YOUR USERNAME]/.litecoin/wallet.dat Edit /Litecoin/ to /Omnicoin/ * - g4t3k33p3r - Apr 21, 2014 (Apr 21, 2014 06:51 AM)Mikezz Wrote: The wallet file contains the private keys we just printed for your Omnicoin addresses. Also I have seen many people have their coins stolen for not taking the extra few minutes to encrypt your private keys. The option is built in to most qt software. * - VirusTotal - Apr 21, 2014 (Apr 21, 2014 06:51 AM)Mikezz Wrote: The wallet file contains the private keys we just printed for your Omnicoin addresses. Yeah i made a few mistakes * - Doctor Blue - Apr 21, 2014 Actually you need to strip away a lot of things in the config file. Crypto Miner won't listen, but daemon=1, server=1, rpcuser and rpcpassword are completely useless if you just need to use it as a wallet. In fact, running it with server=1 is less secure than not doing it, as that starts the RPC server. To be precise... You only need the addnode lines, the rest is useless. Also remember to take caps into account when writing out paths for *NIX. Windows: %AppData%\Omnicoin (Expanded to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Omnicoin Usually) Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Omnicoin/ Linux: ~/.omnicoin Should be Windows: %AppData%\OmniCoin (Expanded to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\OmniCoin Usually) Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/OmniCoin/ Linux: ~/.OmniCoin Now why, you might ask. Because CTRL+H is a powerful tool and some people just aren't ready for it. * - VirusTotal - Apr 21, 2014 (Apr 21, 2014 12:30 PM)Doctor Blue Wrote: Actually you need to strip away a lot of things in the config file.
