My gamer story and my frustration with IRL friends. - Kayoz - May 15, 2014 This is the story of how I was introduced to gaming and how it has affected my life. This is also a semi-vent thread due to the frustrations I'm having (explained in chapter 5). Call me a nerd, geek or whatever. I don't mind. I expect this to get buried underneath the 420 Blaze it threads anyways. Chapter 1 - A gamer was born. I have been playing games since I was 5 and received my first Game Boy. I still remember me and my dad laying in the couch and him having to translate everything into Swedish so I would understand it. My family was not very supportive of my hobby until I reached about the age of 12. That was when they realized I had improved in several subjects because of gaming. For example: At our school we used to play Yu-Gi-Oh and I was always the guy everybody would run to when they didn't understand what a card meant. The same applied to Pokemon and other card games. Chapter 2 - The transition Up until I was 12 I had great friends to game with. Some experts in catching them all, some dedicated single-player gamers and some just derping around in GTA. Then, when I was finished with year 5, we all moved schools. I quickly got new friends and made a name for my self as 'the' "IT-guy" because I knew basically how a computer worked. I tried recruiting my friends to start gaming. I found out one guy (who is now one of my closest friends) played WoW. I had played Runescape before so I thought that this might be the same. I remember I had enjoyed playing Runescape so I purchased a copy of WoW and a couple months of subscription time. We became very good friends and bonded over Skype and WoW. Those days were beautiful. Chapter 3 - The awakening When I had reached the maximum level currently available in WoW (I don't remember what level that was) I started looking up guides and tips and tricks on Youtube. I gradually became better at the game and within weeks I was even better then my friend who had played it for over 4 years. I played the game actively throughout Cataclysm and managed to kill the final boss on normal mode. I kept on playing and connecting with new players throughout Cataclysm. I couldn't help but notice many of these players had played for a shorter time than my friend, but were still better at the game. Anyways, time went on and the new expansion; Mists of Pandaria was released. I leveled up to the new max level with my friend and generally just hung out with him in WoW doing stupid shit for about 6 months. Then something happened. I discovered playing competitively and it felt great. I started raiding the latest raids and noticed he had a lot of trouble tagging along since he was not as skilled as I was. Chapter 4 - The awakening part 2 I did the latest bosses that were released and got bored with waiting for new content, so I started playing another game. This game is known as League of Legends. Oh how I love/hated LoL. It made me rage, it made me laugh and on occasion I honestly think it made me cry of pain. I told my friends at school what an amazing game this was. "And it is free too!" I exclaimed with what was a very high-pitched pre-pubescent voice. I caught a lot of my friends attention and they all gave it a try. They had all 'gamed' before to a certain extent. They were pretty miserably bad at first and I thought of-course that they would improve with time. I rage-quit many times because of them. It was WoW that had turned me into this competitive-hungry monster. Months went by and they learned the very basics of LoL. I always had hopes of them getting better and eventually on my level if not higher. I played with them a lot since then and we generally play with each-other 2 hours every day. Chapter 5 - It's happening 2 years later, my friends are still all playing LoL. They seem to be stuck in this mentality that because LoL is the most popular game, it is the only game. Now you would think they would have become good from practicing this much on a single game. WRONG, WRONG AND OH SO WRONG! They are horrendous, terrible and flat out bad at the game. They cannot focus on anything and they get greedy and often lose the game all by themselves. This frustrates me to no end. "HOW CAN THEY NOT HAVE IMPROVED" I often find myself thinking or yelling with my mic muted on Skype. They are so horrible at the game and I am stuck with them. I have spent months in pure play-time trying to get them to improve and sticking with them. Well no more. I have un-installed the game and do not care to discuss it with them anymore. I am not sure why I wrote all of this, I guess I just had to vent it out. You might think it's not bad but it's torturous to play with them or even discuss the game with them as they seem to have a force-field blocking out all possible knowledge that could risk learning them something. I have no decided I am not playing games with real life friends anymore. I don't want my frustration of their gaming-incapabilities to affect our real-life friendship. If you have read all of this then damn, I'm impressed. TL;DR: Read the whole damn thing, bookmark it for when you are incredibly bored or something. NOTE: I left out a billion games I've played because it would simply take too long. * - Slσth - May 15, 2014 The only rule you ever need to know is, do not mix your real life friends with gaming friends. Your friends in real life, regardless of how "skilled" they think they are at gaming will suck immensely. * - Kayoz - May 15, 2014 (May 15, 2014 02:59 PM)rj1298 Wrote: The only rule you ever need to know is, do not mix your real life friends with gaming friends. When I say gaming in general I'm talking about adapting to new games quickly and understanding basic logic and mechanics of games. * - Jeremy Mckinnon - May 15, 2014 There was a guy on Reddit yesterday who'd played over 6000 ranked games since halfway through season 1 and he's still in Bronze. Most players in LoL with never improve because they're stuck in the mindset that it's everyone else's fault that they're losing and not their own. * - CalebsRealm - May 15, 2014 At my (extremely young) age, most other "gamers" I know still believe that XBox is the best thing out there. * - bar c0de - May 15, 2014 I read through of all of your post; and quite frankly I think we might be the same people. I know the feeling that mixing irl friends to game seriously with would be a good idea; everybody learns that it's not at some point, then you get frustrated because they suck then you drift away from them, I've been through it all. I've never ended up playing league, tried it and hated it after the first month. You won't guess why... -_- * - Kayoz - May 16, 2014 (May 15, 2014 03:42 PM)Greek☮ Wrote: I read through of all of your post; and quite frankly I think we might be the same people. Thanks for reading. I wouldn't even bother playing LoL. It's filled with hatred and shit players who blame each other for everything. I'm gonna try to get into cs:go again. Spoiler (Click to View) * - Hydralic - May 16, 2014 Interesting story, gaming turned you into a competitive monster, sweet. * - Kayoz - May 17, 2014 Aaaaand my attempt to quit LoL failed horribly and now I'm back, climbing like a boss. * - Hlsoka - May 18, 2014 Me and another friend of mine have a troll switch when it comes to playing less serious games( normals/ silver ish ranked). If I don't use it I would go insane since a strong majority is bad at the game. * - Fat Snorlax - May 26, 2014 Why play with them then? If they are bad cease playing with them. You are just enabling yourself to become angrier and angrier each time. * - Blvck Scvle - May 26, 2014 Jesus this is the saddest story I've ever read... Go smoke a bowl and it'll change your life. * - Skyla Blue - May 26, 2014 (May 15, 2014 02:59 PM)rj1298 Wrote: The only rule you ever need to know is, do not mix your real life friends with gaming friends. My best mate is one of the best gamers I know. * - レo√乇 - May 26, 2014 I no longer play with IRL in games I care about. * - Kayoz - May 27, 2014 (May 26, 2014 05:58 PM)Skyla Blue Wrote: Not necessarily true. We grew up together and started playing Pokemon at the age of 5. Also, this thread made it into HF news! 🤝 |
