How common is useing a wep key vs wpa or wpa2 - Tommytoocute1215 - May 16, 2014 Hey just wondering how common is it to find a person who uses Wep keys to protect his/her wifi network. Over wpa or wpa2 and is wpa more common then wep keys??? * - dcromby - May 16, 2014 Mostly all new routers are shipped with WPA/2 enabled as default, so one would imagine that most new home and business routers will not use WEP encryption. However evidence from wigle.net suggests that nearly 20% of networks still rely on wep. What I do know is that low budget establishments still use WEP, such as colleges and travel companies offering wi-fi. Hope this helps :D * - crazyycast13 - May 16, 2014 (May 16, 2014 02:54 PM)dcromby Wrote: Mostly all new routers are shipped with WPA/2 enabled as default, so one would imagine that most new home and business routers will not use WEP encryption. Both WPA2 and WPA take a lot longer to crack than WEP so have fun finding WEP networks. They still exist but are a dying breed. * - sark89 - May 16, 2014 At my work place we STILL have WEP encryption. Thats said we do have an open network for corporate guests and the wireless access points which have WEP encryption? They are fancy projectors which yes will allow you to connect to the web but they are on a separate VLAN away from the network. You'll be surprised though how many small businesses still use WEP. If I was to take a war drive down an industrial estate I will find a WEP encrypted access point. Crazy I know but one thing I've learned in IT is that people protect their businesses etc with physical security i.e. security guards, fancy alarm systems and safes but don't do much about their digital security because they don't see it and they don't understand it. When I say they don't 'see it' I mean that if someone was to break into a building you can see the damage but if someone was to break in digitally into a business and cyper of credit card info chances are the hacked business will never know. Sorry I digressed from your question, in short yes some places still use WEP. * - imposter johnson - May 16, 2014 WPA and WPA2 are almost everywhere. I agree with both of the users above. |
