Advantage to multiple domains? - Folks - Jun 30, 2014

Is there an advantage to have multiple domains only changing the extension? Like having Facebook.com and facebook.net for a new forum/community?

A smaller chance of fakers once you get bigger....
Easier to access (if someone forgot the extention they can just try something?)

if its a large organisation and people access your site a lot you would make it easier since they wont need to remember the extensions

Sometimes if someone has accessed your site and forgot if it was a .net or .com they will still be redirected to the right site. Plus if you plan to make it big then you have the domains before someone else get them.

I would get all the main ones like .com .net .org .info

Would help prevent fishing sites

Lots of reasons:
  • Phishing prevention

  • Localization

  • CDN Domains

  • And more...

However, for a new site, there's really no reason to get more than a single domain.
