Need help with booting + Linux error - Niely - Jul 7, 2014

Hello

I was suggested to come to this section regarding this thread:
https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=4326304

Something went wrong when installing Linux Mint on my USB, somehow it flipped over to my HDD and deleted all Windows files (I think).

This is the error I get when I click on that Toshiba (I've got a Packard Bell though):

(Don't call me wrong, after using Linux Mint in two hours I already find it awesome, but I'd rather keep Windows as primary OS though, and using Linux through USB).

Can someone help me out? :)

Thanks for reading,
Niely

Translation of the error message ?

I assume it has something to do with mounting error. What happens if you mount it with
$ sudo mount /dev/sdb /mnt
?
Might need to change sdb to the appropriate special device file.

And give me the output from

$ sudo fdisk -l

* - Niely - Jul 7, 2014

Code
sudo mount /dev/sdb /mnt
It says it doesn't exists.

Output:

Seems to me that sda is used up by Mint. Your HDD is 500GB right ?

To me this partition seems to be "fake".

Did you encrypt your disk ? or partition.

* - Niely - Jul 7, 2014

Yeah, true it's 500GB, but can't it difference a bit?
And what do you mean with fake?

Is that good or bad for me?

* - Loki123 - Jul 7, 2014

Did you encrypt your HDD ? Your Windows install or Mint ?

And it would help if you set your system to English and post the output from fdisk -l again.

* - Niely - Jul 7, 2014

I think I've encrypted Mint yeah.
But that's it, nothing more!

$ sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt

tell me what happens ..
You have 3 partitions on the disk. two for Linux and one extended.

* - Niely - Jul 7, 2014

Output of that command:
Code
mount: you must specify the filesystem type

What they say at their forum:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&p=887152#p887152

EDIT: It doesn't matter what I put first in Legacy BIOS, it always boot to Linux, even USB when I haven't an USB inserted.
I only get that error when using UEFI (to go back to Windows).

* - Loki123 - Jul 7, 2014

Like they say. Seems like you have damaged that partition or that you are seeing a fake one that shouldn't exist.

Put your HDD to another computer that has Windows and see if you can mount it (Do not format it)
If not you might try some file recovery to recover the data lost from the Windows install and you will have to re install windows.

^I'm not such a techie to do that with this PC. (Maybe with an old one but not this one).
Is it okay to burn that to a disk?
