Used Laptop :: I don't have admin privileges :: I want to format the hard drive don't - iNarrateYourLIfe - Jul 24, 2014

I want to format the HDD, but can't because I don't have admin, nor a win 7 disk.

You don't need admin privileges to reinstall windows.

Download any of this Windows 7.1 version to your computer and create a Bootable usb/dvd. You can format drives while Windows 7 installation. To make a bootable usb use Windows 7 DVD/USB tool, here.

You'll still need Windows Licence key to activate it.

Download the appropriate Windows 7 .ISO file which includes Service Pack 1
(Note: must match what your product key version is for)

I suggest you to grab your current product key on that laptop using ProduKey, then to download the same version of Windows that this laptop is running from here. These are official Windows 7 .iso from Microsoft servers at Digital River Content, the same as Antigen linked. Once you're ready, just follow my tutorial here [The Brotherhood] How to install Windows 7 from a CD/DVD or USB flash drive by Aurа to learn how to create a bootable media with the Windows 7 installation and install Windows.

Well regarding the fact that you don't have an active Windows 7 disk, that's fine. You have up to 30 days to activate a Windows 7 version which I'll link you further on in this response to your thread. Okay, so let's say you have a USB disk and wish to install windows on that. It'll work perfectly fine although there are requirements that you must fit before going about doing this installation of Windows 7 with the USB. Your USB stick must be at-least 4GB due to the sheer size of the Windows IOS size, it's roughly 3 gb. You just need access to the BIOS and the boot loader and select your USB as the first boot device and once you do so, you can boot up Windows with your USB device and it'll prompt you with an installation. Now if you wish to do this via DVD-R or any DVD disk you have laying around the house you can do so, I do not recommend nor am I going to tell you to burn a disk of Windows illegally but rather link you to a legitimate website that gives you the option to download Windows and then from the installation you have up to 30 days to activate it or it'll make your background black, show "This version of Windows is not activated" and you won't get Windows updates like you normally do. But aside from that, you can easily do so with either a USB stick or a DVD-R or just a DVD disk laying around. It'd be the same process as the DVD-R or disk as the USB with the BIOS and boot loader, you'd see the disk name on the boot loader and select it as the first boot(it normally is automatically) and then boot up your PC with the disk as the first boot option on the list and then from there install Windows re-over again.

You don't have to setup the USB or the DVD as the "first boot device" in the BIOS. You can simply press F12 (or whatever option for your manufacturer is) to access the "One-time boot menu" and pick the device to be used for this time boot on the computer. I do this everyday at work and I have to pick the PXE-Boot (imaging computers over SCCM). Also, with slmgr, you can reactivate Windows 30 trial days 3 more times, which gives you 120 days total to run it normally without activation before it starts popping you the annoying "Your Windows is not genuine" message and change your background to black,
