Keeping siblings secure - чистая душа - Aug 3, 2014

To Those without younger siblings:

In today's world it seems every youtube video links to a DarkComet instillation, or a zuessBotnet. It's extremely hard just to keep your own personal computer secure. Now imagine being responsible for 3 younger non-techy siblings... for those of us who care about computer security, its a nightmare.

To Those with younger siblings

I feel your pain. I have 5 siblings all sophmore in HS and younger. At one time i was managing 5 computer. I know how hard it is to tell them No you can't just download paypal money It's frustrating and it's difficult. That's why today i am making this guide to help you keep your computers clean. I will go over some programs you need to have + why scanning is important.

Linux is your best friend
Linux, specifically ubuntu, is fantastic for first time computer users. Take for instance my brother, he is 11 and plays more minecraft than i eat cupcakes (a lot). For his computer ubuntu was perfect. He was probably my worst offender when it game to downloading things he was not suppose to, however linux kept him in line and still allowed him to play minecraft.

Guest session

Not only would i have him set up under ubuntu, my brother was forced to use a guest session. This deleted all his files after he ended a session. While this was annoying for him having to download minecraft everytime, i slept better at night.

Windows is evil... not really

So the dreaded windows, it seems every rat, trojan virus has windows compatibility, so how can you stay safe, in an internet that wants to rape your ports?

Guest sessions...again!
I fucking love guest sessions, they don't allow admin, or even normal user rights. It is hard for some RATS to survive in a guest session.

Scanning

You need to download malwareBytes. Premium is worth it BUT IS NO REPLACE FOR ANTI-VIRUS Set malwarebytes to scan 3 times a day. That seems to be a little overkill, but your passwords are worth it.

Fresh install
If you are anything like me you have a bunch of hard drives laying around. Pop one of those into there computer for them to store files on. Then about 3 times a month, re- install windows. You will still keep all there personal files on that hard disk. Plus you will get rid of any bad stuff.

Anti-Virus
I am no AV expert, but i can tell you it's a must. AV360 seems to be a fairly decent program for a fairly decent price. I can tell you as a crypter programmer it is one of the last ones i am able to get FUD as well.
EDIT: check first post. AV360 is not decent, this is according to a WHH. Check his post for Recommended AV's

Antivirus 360 is far from being the best Antivirus.
The only Antiviruses worth paying for are Kaspersky and ESET, also because they make FUD stubs lose their FUDness pretty fast.

I do agree, I enjoy Linux and do not actually install it. Simply boot from usb, and select a guest session. Some times it sucks that I cannot keep installed programs/scripts there; but it is easier on resources after all.

USB 3.0 makes this actually quite a good idea. Especially if you are just browsing the internet.

Slackware is a decent OS for running via USB. I have never had an issue. That or puppy.

no just no... We don't want to compile everything from source XD

Personally i use Fedora. I love YUM and i think ubuntu is just to far off the core linux community.

Once you get it up and running it is smooth.

Also I would prefer plain Debain over Ubuntu anyday.

My younger brothers don't download stupid shit, I've teached them not to.
And Kubuntu is swag, pure swegg. My grandma has it on her craptop.
