There are different ways and different methods. Could you post a website so we could take a quick look at it (If it has vulnerabilities)? :)
A lot of people do DDoS'ing which isn't really hacking but rather clicking buttons.

If you want to simply shut down a website buy a stresser and hit it offline. But, that is far from permanent in most cases.

As stated above, many people are DDoS'ing the website in order to bring it down, in most cases it wont be offline for a long time.
I'll take a quick look and this when I am back home.
