AV/Firewall Combo for Windows 8.1? - Trisomy 21 - Oct 27, 2014 So long story short, my hp laptop shit itself a few days ago. I did a factory reset and it fixed the issue I was having. But unfortunately, after spending 6 hours installing updates and finally updating from 8 to 8.1, I decided to install comodo firewall. Immediately after setting up comodo I got 'DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION' followed by the frowny face blue screen, and after that my laptop wouldn't boot up. I found that this was actually a COMMON ISSUE with windows 8.1 and comodo firewall, I followed directions from many different places, was able to boot up again, but never for more than a couple of minutes before DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION. So I hastily just did another factory reset from safemode and am in the process of updating my laptop again. Are there any good AV/Firewall combinations known to work well with windows 8.1? Thankyou. * - Guy Fawkes - Oct 27, 2014 You only need a third party firewall because they are easier to control applications. So if you dont mess up with it often there is no need to install one. Windows firewall does the same job on blocking applications. As for Antivirus you can go with Avast free along with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software. * - Ƥerfectionist - Oct 27, 2014 I've got Comodo firewall, Kaspersky Small-office and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.. I don't really know any other good firewall than Comodo, so I can't recommend firewall to you. However, Kaspersky and MBA are really good in my opinion, I've never had an issue with them. If you want free antivirus, you should go with Avast. If you're interested in Kaspersky small office, send me a message via XMMP... * - Aura - Oct 27, 2014 Well, do you want a free or paid Antivirus ? If you take a paid one, you can buy an Internet Security suite that includes a firewall. * - Lana Del Rey_ - Oct 27, 2014 (Oct 27, 2014 01:55 PM)Aurа Wrote: Well, do you want a free or paid Antivirus ? What do you suggest if we were to purchase a paid Antivirus? * - Aura - Oct 27, 2014 (Oct 27, 2014 05:53 PM)Lana Del Rey Wrote: What do you suggest if we were to purchase a paid Antivirus? I only go by two companies : ESET and Kaspersky. ESET Nod32 and Kaspersky Internet Security offers you all what you need, from Antivirus to Firewall. After that, ESET SmartSecurity and Kaspersky PURE offers extra features, but maybe not really needed for the casual user. They have good engines, good detection rates, good performance and good reputation overall. * - Trisomy 21 - Oct 27, 2014 Thanks for the replies, I ended up installing Zone Alarm AV + Firewall before I saw your reply Aura, what is your opinion on Zone Alarm? Edit: And by the way, I am looking for non paid software. * - Aura - Oct 27, 2014 (Oct 27, 2014 06:06 PM)Trisomy 21 Wrote: Thanks for the replies, I ended up installing Zone Alarm AV + Firewall before I saw your reply Aura, what is your opinion on Zone Alarm? ZoneAlarm is good. Not as good as Comodo Firewall but it does a good job. I'm sure you have software that conflict with Comodo Firewall, hence why you're getting these BSODs. |
