How do you stay motivated? - Zealot - Nov 14, 2014 I tried to learn Java a couple months back, i lost interest and stopped doing it because I had know idea where to start, and I didn't know what to code. A lot of people say "just jump into it and code random things, mess around with it" but I had know idea what to do. I suppose the question is where is a good start, how do I stay motivated? Should I find someone else to maybe code with, or maybe talk about coding with? I have a book called Beginning Programing With Java For Dummies, is this a good start? What else could I do to learn faster? My very end goal is to make my own Android app. I figure if I really try learning I could maybe start making an app in 6-7 months? * - Fluxorful - Nov 14, 2014 I'm learning Java too, I'd just say if you have knowledge offer your services and build shit for people, that would help keep you interested. I'm trying to build something like JSpy or Adwin rat. * - Rote - Nov 14, 2014 Java For Dummies is a great start. I say look at what the outcome could be, the more time you put into the the better that app you want to make will end up being and make that bank quicker. * - raven1337 - Nov 14, 2014 Have an imagination, code things that would interest you. * - JavaProfit - Nov 14, 2014 (Nov 14, 2014 08:35 PM)raven1337 Wrote: Have an imagination, code things that would interest you. + this. Coding for fun and get bored with your current project? Put it down for later and start something that's fun. Of course you should make finished products, but learn when to put things aside. Had I known to put stuff down in the past year, I would have probably learned a lot quicker. * - g4143 - Nov 15, 2014 (Nov 14, 2014 07:51 PM)Zealot Wrote: I tried to learn Java a couple months back, i lost interest and stopped doing it because I had know idea where to start, and I didn't know what to code. Programming or learning to program shouldn't be a chore which needs to be accomplished. Its a skill that takes a life-time to get good at. * - H.K.S - Nov 15, 2014 Maybe you dont actually like to program/code. If you want to stay motivated, think about everything you can do with the knowledge Java offers you. All the stuff you can do. The possibilites. Think about something you would like to see working. If you lose interest on a project, then start a new one. If this doesnt work, i guess you should re-think what you want to follow or do. * - Zealot - Nov 15, 2014 (Nov 15, 2014 05:14 AM)g4143 Wrote: How can I say this in a kind way - Sounds like you don't like programming. I do, but all I know how to do is make the computer say something. I'm just having a hard time finding resources to help me learn. Did you try youtube or Googling for PDF's? * - Zealot - Nov 15, 2014 (Nov 15, 2014 10:07 PM)g4143 Wrote: Did you try youtube or Googling for PDF's? No I haven't. I've just been reading the Java book I have. * - g4143 - Nov 15, 2014 (Nov 15, 2014 10:30 PM)Zealot Wrote: No I haven't. I've just been reading the Java book I have. Well the first step is getting through a entry level book on Java. * - whitewoolyhat - Nov 16, 2014 Work on projects which seem interesting. Do loads of stuff with swing. Improve your knowledge by using APIs and programming plugins for chat servers and/or games. That's how I personally stay interested :) * - wolf67 - Nov 16, 2014 Try using teamtreehouse.com, the courses on there split into manageable chunks. They already offer android app courses but they have just released a java basics course also. Far better than the likes of Lynda and it's not as boring as reading PDFs. * - Bibl - Nov 16, 2014 I'm not motivated to write code lol, I just sit there and type and drink energy drinks and type and go to school and come home and drink more energy drinks and type. Usually when I start a project I get bored about a week or two later but I realise that people are waiting and depending on it so I have to just persevere and do the work. |
