Endomous' Submission: Happeh's Submission: Kings~' Submission: Submit your own Music Video of the Week and be featured in next weeks issue by clicking here! - ![]() ![]() Math Rock Hey, Happeh here covering for the Music Highlight/News section and this week and I'm going to focus on a genre named "Math Rock". If you've followed my "Music Videos of the Week" posts these last few months you may recognize the genre or some of the videos I'm going to show you due to my love of the genre but firstly I should mention, Math Rock is not a genre that was created by Japan, neither is it a genre that only Japanese bands play; bands such as OH NO! YOKO (American), NoMeansNo (Canadian) and, Three Trapped Tigers (Australian) are all popular bands within the genre, all international. So why should Math Rock be here? Mainly because of Japan's massive influence on the genre and how in modern music they are incorporating math rock into their pop and making it a popular thing. Math Rock I should explain is rhythmically complex and often guitar-based genre. It incorporates many musical styles such as: jazz fusion, post rock and, indie rock. One band may have a rock overtone that is ever present while another may just prefer instrumental, melodic guitar rifts. What makes Japan's math rock more special is its disregard for eccentric formatting in their songs, instead choosing a more pop-idyllic sense of rhythm, introducing new listeners to the genre. For example, take the band Toe, they use a complicated structure with a seemingly chaotic rhythmic pattern and overtone but all of this is complimented with a rolling melodic guitar and coordinated chord patterns to invoke a sense of comfort and emotions to the listener, which is possibly why they are regarded as one of the best math rock bands out there. Another more contemporary Japanese band 宇宙コンビニ (Uchu Conbini) have described Japanese math rock themselves: “The genre in Japan has unique styles compared to overseas math rock/post rock, I think many Japanese bands have a unique sense of melody mixed with a high-strung rhythm pattern“ and this is almighty true when you listen. Take Uchu Conbini's own song 'Pyramid' and have a listen. You hear this frantic tapping and complicated rhythm but it evolves into a soothing pop melody which really touches the soul. Anyway, I could go on and on about why you should listen but the best way to find out is to experience yourself, not only are all the links above to music of each retrospective bands, but here's a quick list of math rock bands you should definitely checkout:
There's plenty more to checkout, but the best place I recommend to find out more is Reddit's math rock forum where many Japanese bands are posted and where you can explore the genre a little bit more for yourself.
“Let's give it everything we've got! IT'S... PUNISHMENT TIME!” - Junko Enoshima
Alrighty, so this week we've got a less known character: Junko Enoshima played by an equally less known model! (You all know how I love my underdogs). Anywho, once again I just happened to stumble across this model whilst browsing for this weeks CC and, as usual, was captivated by the album, character, and model. :D (I'm also a sucker for pink hair... And bikini's). For those of you who don't know (and would like to), Ms. Enoshima is from the Visual Novel series Danganronpa (Or Dagan Ronpa on some sites). I haven't read the VN myself, but based on this cosplay, I've bookmarked it over on Fuwanovel for later use. Unfortunately Google's reverse image search revealed nothing as to who the model is or the photographer. But what I did find out, was that this whole set (150 sexy images) was done to advertise the garter belt and leopard bikini. It's not that I'm complaining or anything, but still would've loved to know if the model has any more cosplay experience. Of all 150 photo's in the set, I tried to pick the three that represented the best of the best within the album! I hope I haven't disappointed. :P Well, that's it for this weeks cosplay corner! I hope I've appeased all of you Cosplay fans out there! If you have a character you would like me to find and/or feature just let me know! Send me a PM or drop by on Skype and I'll do my best to find what you're looking for! ~Fireworks Series: Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (Visual Novel) Character: Junko Enoshima Gallery: http://exhentai.org/g/769452/d29a30e5f3/ Photographer: N/A Profile: N/A Cosplayer: N/A Profile: N/A * - tweety - Jan 13, 2015

The Japanese Ministry of Defense has an anti-paranormal special forces group called the Supernatural Disaster Prevention Office. They are the ones responsible to protect Japanese soil and its people from supernatural and paranormal events. However, things didn't go so well in one of their missions... This series is a prequel to the manga series, Ga-Rei. Characters ![]() Yomi "Black Shrine Maiden" Isayama Isayama Yomi is the sisterly figure for Tsuchimiya Kagura. She is good spirited and optimistic in the flashback of the anime. She lost her parents at a young age to spectres, and was taken in by Isayama Naraku, then head of the Isayama family. Yomi grew to love and respect her foster-father, and polished her skills to repay him for his kindness. Her efforts led to her inheritance of the priced Isayama heirloom, the sword Shishio, which held the spiritual beast Ranguren in it. A skilled swordmaster, she later became the very thing she fought to destroy. ![]() Kagura Tsuchimiya Kagura in the anime is a little girl that falls into a deep depression when her mother is killed in a fight. After her mother died she had to move in with the Isayama family because of her father being so busy. Her and Yomi quickly became very close and formed a bond such as sisters. Tails' Opinion
Ga Rei: Zero, the prequel to the manga you will see in this AA weekly, Ga Rei, follows the two main characters Yomi and Kagura, introducing them to you in a deeper aspect than you see in the manga. Ga Rei Zero is one of my favorite anime of all time, I really really liked it. The story and the way they present it to you is very unique. The first 2 or 3 episodes are literally the end of the 12 episode story chronologically, but after that they revisit the entire story and how things got to the point they are showing you. Its a very backwards approach to storytelling but it is awesome! It also lets you truly understand story progression because you pretty much know the end. This is truly an anime thats goal is the ride, not the destination. As for the concept of the show, its moderately unique, its an action anime at its core, but does a really good job of pushing in some relationship stuff and just overall feels without it feeling too forced. The two things I liked most though were the minimal use of fan service, there was one bath scene where some nipples were shown for all of 30 seconds and there was only one episode with filler material for about 10 minutes and even that felt like it needed to be there to establish relationships. I give the story a 9/10 If there is a shining star in this anime its definitely the characters, I've never fallen so in love with a cast as I did Ga Rei Zero. From the two mains dynamic with each other being extremely lovable to the supporting cast being so strong they feel like mains, there isn't a shortcoming anywhere. In the side characters that you see for only that moment, fill characters if you will, soldiers, you can actually grasp the fear they feel as they are fighting the beasts plaguing the city and they set a good baseline of what the enemy is and the strength of the mains. But my god, I just loved Kagura and Yomi so much... I give the characters a 10/10. Usually when I look at art I have to obviously look at the year it was made, Ga Rei Zero came out in 2008. So already you know that compared to more recent works its gonna be a little lackluster, there is something about the art though that makes it feel like the staff was stretched a little thin, some of the backgrounds were beautiful, such as sunsets and the fight scenes were incredibly detailed but you can tell that the focus went into those two things. Sometimes you can see the art falter just a little bit but for the most part its not bad. I think the pros so heavily outweigh the cons here that it deserves a good score. Because those fight scenes are pretty good. I give the art an 8/10. Remember when I said Ga Rei Zero was one of the my favorite anime of all time? Yeah, go ahead and expect a ridiculously high number for this section. Probably a ten. Yeah, lets make it a ten. Honestly, its hard for me personally to not think highly of this series. It was one of the anime that truly got me into anime back when I first started and even re watching it a second time this past weekend and trying to find little things to hate didn't get me anywhere because Ga Rei Zero is actually that good. I loved the approach to the storytelling and more than anything I loved how it leads into the manga. Like I said, this anime is a prequel to the manga, and if you stumbled upon the manga and enjoyed it, you absolutely have to watch the anime, if you read the manga highlights this week and want to read Ga Rei, I really do suggest watching this anime. Or if you read this anime review and feel like you want to watch the show, I suggest you read the manga because you will probably want more. In terms of enjoyment I give it a 10/10 Programmargorp's Opinion
First I have to say that I haven’t actually read the Ga Rei manga, which means that my section of this review won’t contain any aspects or comparisons to the manga. With that out of the way, lets start our review of one of the best shounen anime I have ever watched: Ga Rei Zero!Ga Rei Zero is one of those series that manages to capture your attention from the very first second to the end. We start off with lots and lots of action, then coupled with one of the largest plot twists I've seen in some time (I won’t reveal what it is, but you’ll see at the end of episode 1). The story itself is well structured and well written out that there aren't any obvious contradictions or Deus Ex’s that screw stuff over. Most importantly, there’s no “NAKAMA POWAH” throughout the series. That’s always a plus for any shounen series. Perhaps what really bought this series up to the high status that it deserved was the design of the characters. The main characters, especially Yomi and Kagura were well designed, multi-dimensional characters that actually gave off the feel of true dynamics between them. The cast differs from other shounen series in the way that they appear “alive” to the viewer as opposed to the predictable nature of a lot of other series. On top of that AIC and Asread managed to pump out art that’s pretty great art as well as well animated action. Being made in 2008, the art quality as well as animation is better than some of the series releasing this season such as Absolute Duo or Shinmai Maou no Testament! Seriously, the only bad thing I can pick out from this series is the very crappy use of 3d at some points, but that’s not enough to screw stuff over. Anyway, I've talked enough about the series, now to deliver the verdict. Should you watch Ga Rei Zero? Yes. This is one series that’s labelled shounen, but doesn't actually fit exactly into its clichés . It’s one of those series that just draws you in from episode one and keeps you drawn in there for its duration. Simply this series is worth a watch if you like the shounen genre even remotely, or you want to see just what the shounen genre can do. To end this off, the series asked some pretty significant questions. Perhaps the most significant one is: “Would you kill someone you love because of love?” Tails' Rating 9/10
Programmargorp's Rating 9/10

![]() Really nice covers. Title - Ga-Rei Title in Japanese- 喰霊 Genre(s)- Action, Comedy, Demons, Ecchi, Martial Arts, School, Supernatural Chapters currently released - 52 Author – Hajime Segawa Artist(s) – Hajime Segawa Released - Oct 26, 2005 to Jan 26, 2010 Status - Completed Synopsis While many of us will probably scream at even the thought of a ghost being near us, Freshman Nimura Kensuke just thinks of it as a common everyday thing, seeing as how he has the uncanny ability to see so many of them on a daily basis. Things soon heat up for him when he meets a girl who changes his life from then on. Her name is Kagura, and she has the power to summon a mighty "spirit devourer"—otherwise known as a "Ga-rei"—called Byakuei. So, what's Nimura to do? Chase down the evil spirits and and have Kagura summon the Ga-rei to devour them, of course! Now, come feast on their adventures like some ravenous Ga-rei! Characters ![]() Generic Cool Stance 4501 Kensuke Nimura (弐村 剣輔) The protagonist, an ordinary high school student who has had the ability to see ghosts ever since he was a kid. Because of this, he always felt different, but things changed after meeting Kagura. He started practicing kendo from a young age, being the son of a kendo instructor, and utilizes his skills during missions. When fighting, he sometimes dons a pair of sunglasses. The storyline concerns his growth as a spirit-user, his main weapon being swords. He initially wields "Michael #12," but after breaking it in a battle, is given the sword "Michael Revolution" in its place. He supports Kagura during her emotional lows, and a bond develops between them. ![]() Random Female Detective Stance... Kagura Tsuchimiya (土宮 神楽) Always smiling, Kagura is the heroine of the story. She is feisty, ambitious and can put up a good fight with her Byakuei. She quite obviously has feeling towards Kensuke or "Ken-chan" as she calls him which has a dramatic influence over her reactions to some situations. Vandie’s Opinion The story of Ga-Rei is certainly interesting. It begins with the protagonist Kensuke explaining about his ability to see ghosts and how that has affected his life. This then allows for the next bit to make sense. The next bit essentially has a bunch of demon babies chasing him around the town until he meets Kagura. She sees that he too can see ghosts and thus joins his school and makes him join a spirit fighting team of sorts. The story follows the two as their relationship and personalities grow. The story has a few points where you are surprised by the goings on and some where what happened is so blatantly obvious that you want to slap the characters right then and there for not realizing. The story does distinct itself from other demon related manga although not by much which makes it so this doesn't really feel like an accomplishment. Over all though the story is enjoyable and cleverly written so... The story gets an 8.5/10 The characters are very important within Ga-Rei, more so than in other stories due to the fact that Ga-Rei is a story about the characters personal and group development... Which just happens to have them beating the crap out of demons a lot. Even the villains of the manga are interesting. They all have there own back story which makes you unsure whether what they are doing is really what they want to do or as they say themselves the will of the Sesshouseki. The Sesshouseki, as I understand it, is a rare demonic rock which could be classed as a character as it is explained to have a will. The villains of the story all seem to be following the Sesshouseki's will throughout the story resulting in a rather strange "main villain". Don't even get me started on the two protagonists , Kensuke and Kagura, as they are both really interesting in their own right. Kagura having inherited some god like spirit which is part of the original nine tailed fox and is bound to her soul to protect the world. And Kensuke who is only fighting for the sake of Kagura even though he doesn't fully understand why.He also doesn't seem to have come from a linage of spirit fighters like Kagura or the others and as such makes you want to know why he can see ghosts and spirits. The characters are defiantly one of the better parts to Ga-Rei and as such... The Characters get a rather high 9/10 The art of Gai-Rei feels very busy with very little blank space during any of the violence. On the other hand it is very clear what is going on at any point due to the main image of each tile standing out almost instantly. The character expressions are also brilliant allowing for very quick understand of a characters feelings being developed as you read each nicely drawn tile. Because of all this... The art gets a nice 8/10 Overall Ga-Rei is a brilliant manga that I would recommend to anyone who likes action packed stories with a heavy basis on character development. The thing about Ga-Rei is very little feels shoe-horned in. It just kind of...fits... This allows for Ga-Rei to easily become a personal favorite of mine and so... Ga-Rei will Receive a high up 8.5/10 Thanks for reading my section again guys, I know that a lot of you enjoy reading AA weekly so I request that if you can, do send a PM to me requesting a manga as I feel kind of stuck when it comes to picking one out at the beginning of each week. Again. Thanks for reading. Signed, Vandie * - tweety - Jan 13, 2015
Synopsis:![]() Sekien no Inganock -What a Beautiful People- Inganock, a city isolated from the outside, a city where everything is distorted, even the sun. It all started ten years ago, at a day called as 'Revival'. Then residents of the city slowly changed into beings that are partially human and partially animal. To this day, only a few still look fully human on the outside. One of these is Gii, a former medical student, now an illegal doctor that walks the city and cures the poor for free. He changed too, but only in the inside and his change enabled him a mysterious ability that he uses to heal people that keep mutating further every day. He has a few 'friends' if you can call them that. One of them is a black steel cat girl called Ati. Another one is an old friend from his medical school that he just met again after ten years, Salem. And the games story really begins when he encounters a little girl with pink eyes named Kia... Story review: Sekien no Ingaok is a story that was written for its atmosphere. It somehow combines the strange and the mundane, wrapping them up in an intriguing package. The game has the unique function of letting you see the inner thoughts of other characters, adding to the depth of the story (not to mention giving a great chance to get factual information that would have been painful to write into the plot). The mystery behind the city is peeled away slowly but surely, behind stories of the city’s citizens that are bittersweet, no, more often simply bitter. There are a multitude of themes present in the story, and savoring them is one of the best parts of reading. The society presented in SNI is racist, sexist, and prejudiced against the poor, and it also touches on social problems like prostitution and drug use. But what really makes the story interesting is its moral dilemmas. Is a promise really good enough to justify taking a certain action? Is it right to oppress others? To what extent should society be punished for things that they can’t fix? Can one life be more important than another? The story is very open ended, so you’ll have to figure that out for yourself. When you play this game, you really have to take out your sense of disbelief, and don’t look for close-ended answers. SnI is about the atmosphere and the emotions of the characters, not about why exactly things happened the way they did. This might be a bad thing for some, and I usually hate open ended endings, but this one was just nice somehow, and it really BEGS for a second reading so that you can really absorb what happened. Of course there were a few flaws such as very repetitive fight scenes that happen the exact same way again and again and again, and the repetition of a certain man with a watch. Sound: The game has a great soundtrack that really adds to the environment. The opening and ending songs, are sang by Rita (you may know her as the singer of Little Busters). One problem though is not all of it is voiced, you might have one line voiced then nothing for half an hour. It's disappointing since they seem to fit into their roles so well. Art The art is quite beautiful, and although I don’t really like the look of a couple of the sprites, there’s no denying that they’re wonderfully drawn and colored. The backgrounds are dark and fantastical, and normally give off a steampunk vibe that makes them fit perfectly. Spoiler (Click to View) Spoiler (Click to View) Spoiler (Click to View) Spoiler (Click to View) Overall Satisfaction: I was interested in this the moment I read the description and I wasn't disappointed playing this vn. Special thanks to iMew Ever since iMew has joined the team as a backup writer, he has proven himself to be extremely reliable, stopping the Weekly's being delayed by another week. We all have personal issues and many other factors that can stop or delay the Weekly from being published, however, iMew has managed to iron those out. Special thanks to him for taking over the Headlines for Dragon. Special thanks to Happeh Happeh has started helping out the Weekly again since this week was a bit of a struggle. I'm assuming he wants to preach to everyone about the lovely world of Math Rock so he won't be complaining at all. He has also been helping out with proof reading and writing this weeks Music section, even though he won't be able to see the publication on HackForums itself. We appreciate it! The News Team:
