[C-TUT] How to create medieval-like text in Photoshop - Shxtdown - Mar 21, 2015 ![]() Hey HF! Welcome to my tutorial on how to create a medieval-like signature or banner, as some like to call it. I say 'medieval-like' because it doesn't totally look medieval, however if I may say so myself, it still looks pretty damn good. If you have not already guessed we'll be making the text that is shown above. I'm not sure if there are similar tutorials although I decided to make one all the same, if you have any questions do not hesitate to leave them in the comments below. What is required?
Making a medieval signature Step 1: Creating the canvas Create a new photoshop canvas, the recommended dimensions are 380x80 pixels, although whatever you would like is fine; just remember you would have to alter the font size and it may not look as good. Spoiler (Click to View) Step 2: Setting up our background Click your colour picker & enter the code #333333 in the corner, this is the default background colour of the HF forums and will help us view what we are creating, it is not required however it definitely makes it easier for us to work. After doing this select the paint bucket tool or press G, now fill your background will that colour, this is our first layer. Step 3: Placing the text Select the text tool by pressing T, make sure you have the correct font (TrajanPro Bold) selected & enter the text you would like at 60 pt, I chose medieval as it is tutorial specific but you can put your username! Make sure it is in the center of the canvas, after doing so highlight the text & again in the colour picker change the colour of the text to #471d1d - it may look ugly but we'll improve it! You should have this - Spoiler (Click to View) Step 4: Adding our first stock Make sure you have both the image stocks downloaded, if you do not download them by clicking the link in the requirements section of the tutorial. We'll be using the first stock. Place the stock so the bottom part is covering the whole canvas (simply resize the stock if it isn't that big.) Now right click that layer and select 'create clipping mask', before doing so make sure it is above your text layer. After you have done so you should notice the stock has taken over your text somewhat, when you have created the clipping mask select the overlay option, it now should look like this - Spoiler (Click to View) Step 5: Blending Options This is the fun part! We now will alter the blending options so our medieval text looks a little cooler, just follow what I have done and yours will look exactly like mine, these were the blending options used - Spoiler (Click to View) Alright, after doing that you should have something similar to this - Spoiler (Click to View) Step 6: Darkening If you've got up to this step, congratulations! Not many make it further than step 5, so hats off. This next bit is a little tricky though, so make sure you pay attention. Create a new layer and select your brush tool by pressing B and select a soft brush at 70 pt, now make a swipe across the bottom of your text like this - Spoiler (Click to View) Now, again making sure it is above the first clipping mask you created (the image stock) select the soft brush layer and create a clipping mask on the text layer, now lower the opacity of that layer to 50. Your signature should now look like this - Spoiler (Click to View) Step 7: Adding the last stock Make sure you have the last stock downloaded and place it as shown - Spoiler (Click to View) Now making sure it is above every other layer create a clipping mask and select overlay, then proceed to set the opacity to 70%, the signature should now look like this - Spoiler (Click to View) Now delete the background layer, save it as a .png, and tadah! We have finished the signature, congratulations. 🤗 If you have any questions leave them below. * - Rayxl - Mar 21, 2015 High quality tutorial man, should manipulate the font to do a crumbling effect which would look pretty nice and rather easy to do. Nevertheless, brilliant presentation. * - Shxtdown - Mar 21, 2015 (Mar 21, 2015 11:10 AM)Rayxl Wrote: High quality tutorial man, should manipulate the font to do a crumbling effect which would look pretty nice and rather easy to do.
