Plex media server question? - CorrosiveBlueberry - May 24, 2015

So i always try to conserve my internet service provider bandwidth for the month because i can easily spend my 350gb cap in a few days then im screwed for the whole month, im able to spend it wisely if i want and last a month and still get what i want.

Anyways when i use plex media server in my house to my computers it does not increase my data usage at all because its using DLNA i believe thats the reason, or my local network and not the internet. Anyways it definately never eats bandwidth.

What i want to know is, would it be okay for me to share my plex with a friend and let him stream of my server( a home computer using my ISP) or would it eat my bandwidth since he is outside of my network? I assume it would eat my bandwidth im just wondering:(

I too have a Plex media server at home and while its convenient it only uses my switch bandwidth, not my internet bandwidth.

But if I were to stream videos out to the internet, it will use my internet upload speed which will chew up my monthly cap pretty quickly, since all my movies are in either 720p or 1080p resolution.

So to answer your question, you can share it with your friend, however, you need to be careful not to get caught because what you're about to do is not legal.

On the other hand, you could setup an OpenVPN server and have all your stream encrypted.

Yes, you can stream it over Internet.

Yes, it will consume your Internet traffic allowance.

it would consume your upload quota because you're the source. he would be downloading it.

In addition to the stuff that has already been said your upload speed could be an issue for high-res videos.

Correct, especially if you are using ADSL2+, which doesn't have a very fast upload speed.

It would eat your bandwidth since he is streaming remotely.
