Best way to name your programs? - JavaProphet - Jun 23, 2015

So, I frequently run into the "what do I call it" problem.
I could just skip creativity and name everything "Jstuff", etc, but that's no fun.
In my current case, I'm writing a Java->Native compiler, and every name I think of is sounding cheesy.

Step 1: If you prefix all of your products with a J, please consider changing that.
Step 2: Don't use hipster names that have nothing to do with the program's purpose.

I have the Same problem usually I will ask someone or end up using a really cheesy name. Also do take into consideration Systemic.

I sometimes have the same problem but with classes, I'm stumped on what to name it.

OP just give it a unique name, Python does it all the time, they create something and give it a name that has 0% link with the project, take for example, BeautifulSoup, who would of thought that was a HTML parser, also, Flask too. Who would of thought that was a framework too.

I was thinking NCompiler or is that too bland?

First of all, thanks for asking your frends to add negative rep to me, but an java->native compiler is near impossible, kthnx ;-)

It's not impossible (for other people to make).

@Grin What does the N stand for? Otherwise, it tell's you what it is, so I'm liking it.

It's almost like the name has something to do with the program

Should be more like:
NO-mpiler

"Yet another" followed by the function of the program. I.e. Avuna could be "Yet Another Web Server"

I think "A procedural, shitty" would be a better statement to precede the function of the program.

While working on it, a describtive name is never wrong. You can always change it to something better later on.

I just keep things as specific/short as possible. You don't need to be creative to think of a name, so don't try too hard.

I like abstract words that sound very appealing, Avuna for instance.
Look up statistics on most appealing or used words and blend them together to make a compound word or blend them together.
For some reason you have to have a "cute" prefix like adding a Y to the end of a name or something.

Words from other very unknown languages work well.
