How to stay motivated? - Figm3ntation - Jun 28, 2015

Hey, just looking for motivational tips and ways to keep focused on Java. My biggest excuse would be "I'm too tired" and such. Thanks

Hello Figm3ntation,

The only advice I could give to you: Simply try to create/enhance programs that are either only interesting to you, or programs that have not been made before.

I do not program in Java much but my friend DMoneigh does. Here is a link to his Github page http://www.github.com/DMoneigh
A couple of his projects are unique in the sense that they have not been made before in Java.

Best Regards,
NullifiedVoid

If you aren't really motivated then are you sure that programming is really for you? It takes a lot of work to learn a language - I know you are probably thinking that you just want to create amazing applications now but you need to start slow.

This. You shouldn't need motivation if you enjoy doing it

I have no idea if its for me, I do have amazing ideas but starting slow is putting me off. I really want to bring some to life.

The same has been happening to me. I've been pumping out code updates and reviewing code for a few months straight and now when I sit down to look at the code, I get bored/don't know how to continue. I'd recommend taking a break for a while and then coming back to it in a few weeks/months.

You could set yourself lets say an hour a day for learning java, this way you will not grow bored of it in one day by over exhausting yourself and before you know it, overtime you will see the hour passing by faster and faster and will find yourself willing to spend more time at it simply because you enjoy it.

Markus Persson. Selftaught programer. Wrote minecraft and later sold it for a couple of billion dollars. :-)

You can listen motivanital musics. Always works :)

Set your goals to be achievable. Don't start off by making a MMO game or something like that.
Start with small, simple programs and work your way through. Meanwhile, listen to your favorite music.
Have a proper breaks to rest your eyes and brains.

You can't find motivation, motivation finds you.

Just look around at projects and you'll eventually think of a cool idea. My latest idea was a web based mix of: GitHub (git source control management), JIRA (team tracking and issue tracking w/ interaction) and some kind of online social coding environment like Koding. This way it'd be like a global connection of programmers linked by their projects and would allow easy issue and team tracking in one place.

Listening to music is said to help you remember, so if you listen and program at the same time, listening back to this music later will help.

Lel, just don't listen to your favourite song on repeat or when debugging problems as, after a while, that song will no longer be your favourite song.

If you have an idea to make something and it is something that you know you can accomplish (not like "today I am going to build a nuclear power plant out of Java"), write it down. Establish goals for yourself and have due dates for them. Like an elementary school planner except for your current project.
