Computer Damage Opinions - Lures - Jul 7, 2015

So I have this laptop that is a few years old and I was watching a movie and fell asleep, I had a glass of milk on the counter that ended up getting spilled all over the keyboard and sat over night. Most keys on the keyboard no longer work and a few tend to stick down but that appears to be the extent of the damage, this was a month ago. Yesterday when I was checking to see if it still worked upon powering it up the monitor went black. Volume and all still worked and I was able to log in despite no monitor, I ended up having to shake the computer a bit and it turned on.

How much longer do you think that it will keep trucking on without me having to crack it open and replace parts?

(neglect at its finest 🤝 )

Make sure cable connected to monitor and graphic card is securely fixed in place also make sure graphic card is securely connected. If problem persist then connect your computer to a different monitor to eliminate monitor malfunctioning or not.

What was the extent of the spill? Did you remove the keyboard after it happened and did it leak down onto the mobo?

If it didn't soak in, and the external monitor worked, there is a possibility that the screen issue is not related to the spill and the invertor is just going bad. (Google) It a long shaped board that converts DC to AC for the LEDs around the screen. It is located just underneath the screen on the inside and is often replaced. Costs about $15.

If it did soak in, pull out the 90% akchol and q tips and get to work. Probably have a bridged connection somewhere.

It soaked in... I mean I took a rag and wiped it down but I had to go to work so really bad timing so basically it sat there for 30 hours basking in milk.

Extent of the spill was about 12 (ish) ounces of milk seeping into the keyboard for 30 hours.

Ok Im about to crack it open and set things straight, future is not bright for the laptop though probs gonna need some spare parts at the least havn't seen the damage extent yet.

I will make sure that graphics card is in good shape and connected.

Q tips for days.

No luck with the external monitor?

Just a tip for cleaning small chips. Heat up the 90% alcohol just to luke warm temps (Use the sun). Then wipe the chips down and wait a sec. Then hit them with compressed air and wipe it up. Repeat.

Well it was just the one time that it went all screwy nothing a bit of abuse couldn't fix.

Why luke warm temp?

If it's not broken, don't fix it.

But warmth dissolves compounds quicker. Have you ever done the dishes with cold water? 🤣
