Is the PM text area the same color as the text area when creating a new thread? If so, try navigating to Templates & Style -> Themes -> Your Theme -> global.css and look for the textarea selector. You can either change the 'background' property to a different color or change the 'color' property to a different color (this is for the font).

It is just 'textarea' but it's also a selector. Anyways, when you update your site, do they update instantly? Or do you have to wait a while for it to switch over?

You will have to change the text color or the PM background color through the CSS. You can test changing it in Inspect Element before applying the changes.
