Never watched anime before, will start soon. Any Ideas? - Kayvh - Dec 19, 2015

Hello, I was out in town the two days ago and was looking around and went to HMV and i went to the anime section to browse, my brother loves anime but i was not really into it until i seen on the shelf "Onepiece" it looked like a decent anime aswell as "Afro Samurai". My brother suggested i should watch "Sword Art Online"
he said that i would like it, anyone got any other ideas?

I would say watch SAO but here's a few different ones to go along with that.

Attack on Titan
Death Note
Akame ga Kill
Steins;Gate

What I rated a 10 since that list isn't part of it is what I'll recommend. Log Horizon in particular is what I'd call "Sword Art Online but done well." SAO has a lot of epic fight scenes and are done way better than in Log Horizon but I feel like the execution of the actual plot as well as the drive for it is clear and solidified in Log Horizon, whereas in SAO it's just filled with random crap that doesn't really need to be there (and sometimes doesn't make sense). Both are very entertaining to watch, though.
You might as well also check out White Album 2 and Shokugeki no Souma

Stay far far away from Sword Art Online if you know what's good for you.

Sword Art Online is a terrible anime to start with if you're new to the medium. I reccomend Earth Maiden Arjuna, Death Note, Naruto, Hajime no Ippo, Rainbow, Gosick, and Yuu Yuu Hakusho!

A good place to start watching anime:

action/adventure:

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
A tale of 2 alchemist brothers trying to find the Philosopher's Stone, this one's a bit long at 64 episodes, but is one of the most popular shows on MAL, with users giving it a total average of 9.25/10.

mecha/mysterious power/sci-fi:

Code Geass
Set in "the future" (show takes places in 2010, this aired in 2007) where the Britannia empire rules most of the world including Japan, A high school student suddenly gets a magical power from a strange being and he must use that power to achieve his true goal. This one's two 25 episode seasons, but it it keeps you watching, you'll never want to stop a binge watch.

slice of life/comedy/supernatural:

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
The MAL synopsis describes this one pretty well - "Kyon, your typical high school student, has long given up his belief in the supernatural. However, upon meeting Haruhi Suzumiya, he quickly finds out that it is the supernatural that she is interested in—aliens, time travelers, and espers among other things. When Haruhi laments about the lack of intriguing clubs around school, Kyon inspires Haruhi to form her own club. As a result, the SOS Brigade is formed, a club which specializes in all that is the supernatural. The story follows the crazy adventures that [the club] endures under their whimsical leader, Haruhi.

Every show I've recommended is available both in English and in Japanese with English subtitles, although they all have fantastic English releases. My recommendations were meant to cover ground with plenty of genres, so if there's a certain type of show you're into, let me know and I can specifically cover things similar to it. Cheers.
