Let's first know about the full name of HTML and CSS:

  • HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language

  • CSS - Cascading Style Sheets

Web pages are created using HTML and CSS. What do these languages do?

  • HTML is used to establish a page's structure. It also lets us add text, links and images.

  • CSS is used to control the design and layout of the page.

For example, here is a screenshot of a website with and without css:

Therefore, changing the CSS can create a different style for the same webpage:

But before CSS, we need a HTML file to determine the contents of the webpage, here is an example of HTML file structure:
Code
<html>
<head>
   <title>Page title here</title>
</head>
<body>
   This is sample text...
   [b]<!--[/b] We use this syntax to write comments -->
   [b]<!--[/b] Page content and rest of the tage here... -->
   [b]<!--[/b] This is the actual area that gets shown in the browser -->
</body>
</html>

The browser reads the file and determines how to display the contents, for example,
Code
<p>You are <em>beginning</em> to learn <b>HTML</b>.</p>
Will lead to:
You are beginning to learn HTML.

So, this is the end for my first tutorial introducing HTML and CSS to you.

In the next tutorial, we will cover HTML elements, which are the basic units of a webpage.
