Tutorial: How to use a old Android phone as a IP camera.

You will need:
Materials
1x old android phone with WiFi enabled ( I used a Samsung Skyrocket with a bad SIM reader)
1x Charger for android phone
1x large binder clip
1x 1 Foot long metal flatrod. (I used the ones fencers use on cyclone fencing)
1x Rivet (you can use a nut and bolt if you don"t have access to rivets)
1x strong rubber band
2x 1 5/8 Drywall screws (or something to attach to the surface your mounting to.)

Software/Apps
This App (clicking this link will take you to the Google Play Store)

Tools
Hand riveter (or if using nuts and bolts the appropriate size wrenches)
Stationary Vice
Drill with 3/16ths (or comparable) drill bit for metal (A drill press would be better if you have access to one)
a Phillips driver for Drill (for mounting the mount)
Hammer
Bench grinder (or hand held grinder)
Saw (to cut your flatrod)

(I assume that you know how to configure a static IP without having me to show pictures)
1. We are going to prepare the phone for IP Camera use. What you need to do is download and install that app listed above.

2. Next you need to login into your routers internal settings and configure this device with a STATIC IP ADDRESS! (This is critical as if you let DHCP assign its IP you will not be able to find the cameras address.)

I cloned its MAC address and I binded it with a static IP. So when this device connects to my network it will have the same IP address.

3. Open IP Webcam and set it up. Make sure that the port that you specify is open. I left it as the default.

If you want authentication setup the username and password otherwise leave this alone.

4. If your done with configuring, scroll to the very bottom and tap Start Server/Start Stream. This will display whatever your pointing the phones camera at on your phones screen.

5. To test it open a web browser and go to the IP you configured earlier. Don't forget to insert a colon (:) and the port number. Example: 10.0.1.100:8080

If it works then you are done with the phone part now we will build the mount for it.

6. Take a binder clip and take it apart. You should end up with this:

7. go to your Vice and insert the chrome part of the binder clip into the Vice. Make sure the round part is on Top and using a hammer gently tap it down to make a 45 degree bend. Repeat for the other side:
You should end up with something like this:

8. Reassemble the binder clip you should end up with this:

9. Take a rubber band and wrap around the binder clips openers (the parts you bent earlier). This is for reverse tension to hold the device your going to install.....
You should wind up with something like this:

10. Take the binder clip outside and drill a hole in one side as shown:

11. Take your flatrod and measure and cut a 1 Foot piece.

12. Using the drill (or drill press) drill a hole in the end of the flatrod. If you want, using a bench grinder or hand held grinder round off the end of the flatrod you drilled the hole in. You should have something like this:

13. If for some reason your bolt/rivet isn't long enough grind away some flatrod like this:

Continued below...

14. Grab your Rivet gun and load a appropriate size rivet into the riveter. (Remember if you're using nuts and bolts make sure you have the correct size wrenches)

15. Grab the binder clip and clip on the end where you drilled your hole and line the hole in the flatrod with the hole in the binder clip.

16. Grab the riveter and place the rivet into the hole going thru the binder clip and the flatrod and squeeze the handle of the riveter until the rivet has collapsed. You should hear a clank sound. This is the riveter cutting the manderal (the part that goes inside the riveter) off of the rivet.
(If you're using Nuts and bolts this can be challenging. Place your bolt thru the hole going into the binder clip and the flatrod and start your nut from inside the binder clip. A pair of Vice Grips may come in handy to hold open the binder clip while you get your nut started.)

17. This is what you should have:

18. Figure out where you want to bend it at and where you want two more holes at. (These will be used to mount the mount to the surface you're attaching to.)

19. Drill your holes.

20. This should be your final product:

Here is one I made the other day to hold the skyrocket I mentioned earlier.

And here is the computer end of my IP Camera: (yes those are chickens)

I strongly recommend in purchasing a hand riveter if you don't already have one. They are about $12 at Harbor Freight Tools.

That's actually pretty sweet. I have an old HTC One X lying around that would be perfect for this. Good show.

The skyrocket wasn't rooted so I wouldn't think you would need root access.

One more thing to mention if for some reason your camera becomes very warm, take a heatsink (a north bridge one would be perfect) and zip tie it to the warm spot on the phone. This will cause the excess heat to dissipate more easily.

Im glad my tutorial helped you.

Another thing to mention, Wherever you plan to place this make sure your WiFi has a decent signal or you might have to get a wireless repeater.
