[TUT] How to Find Skype Impostors! - YayHar - Jan 29, 2016

CATCHING SKYPE IMPOSTORS:

So there are the scum of the internet who Scam in order to get a pretty penny, and as you may already know, Skype Impostors are frequent.

Skype Impostor: Somebody who creates a skype similar to a reputable HF member and scams with that account.

I have seen one guy do this, and if I find his name it'll be added here, but I feel like this should have a thread to itself.

Setup:

You need an OLD thread. Like a thread nobody would be possible viewing.
I have a thread which is not old, but nobody would be viewing it.

You also a need a skype, of course.

Execution:

You will need to make it seem believable, add the person, and say you want to do an exchange, whatever.

They will Obviously be interested, just say "Hey, check out my thread for it" or be creative.

HF has a feature that allows for you to see members viewing the thread.
If you're Ub3r, you can even see members who have the setting as "don't show I'm online".

They will click on the thread, and just refresh the page until somebody views the page. The only person who would be viewing that page is
somebody who got that link... aka the Scammer.

Congratz, you now know the scammers profile. Make sure to take tons of screenshots and provide proof.

Awesome thread, pretty smart way of finding them on HF. Another way could be going "Hey man you've won a giveaway, give me your user ID for free L33T, if you're already ranked you can get $50, just give me your UID to verify."

But it's not completely solid proof. This person could be aware of this and make someone else visit the thread. I'm sure most impostors have multiple contacts and if they send the link to someone else, then you're going to be accusing the wrong guy :(

True, but it's a pretty solid plan. I'll try and think of another olan, but none comes to mind.

I want this to be seen, so it might help somebody.

Cool method of figuring out who is behind the Skype profile. Thanks for sharing.

This is actually a really nice and creative method!
Thanks for this man!

Amazing idea! This deserves a sticky. I'm glad you made this! Surely an awesome almost foolproof idea to get rid of an impostor.

Great thread, hopefully it cuts down the scammers and people actually are aware.

Not foolproof :P

The impersonator would most likely have plenty of other people added that are from HF, and if he's aware of the trap, he can send the URL to another person to click on

He said almost foolproof.

Sadly, this isn't solid proof that the member viewing the thread is the person who you've linked to the thread.

You wouldn't automatically say the user is the culprit, but it narrows down on the people.

Plus+ you can just send them a hyperlink to a fake screenshot, but it redirects to a Hack forums thread where you're waiting.

Not a bad method, thanks for the share.

How does it deserve a sticky?
It's not even unique, many people already use it

It's actually logical thinking
