[HELP] USB drive is "online" but I cannot format, read, assign a letter, etc... - SIM-1316071 - Feb 19, 2016

Hey everyone, I am having issues with a particular usb drive that I need to use with my windows 10 machine.

I connect it to my computer, it makes the device connected sound, and then when I check explorer it does not show up as a drive or as something to eject safely (though my c drive is there for some reason).

I can see it in disk management, and it is marked as healthy, active, and "Primary Partition" however the files system and name of the volume do not show up. When I try to format it, it says that the volume is offline, and when I try to assign a drive letter, it says that the path could not be specified.

Then, in diskpart in cmd, the drive is online, and I can select the partition, however when trying to format it it says that the path could not be specified.

I have tried:

Reinstalling drivers, updating chipset/mobo drivers, and just about everything with diskpart and disk management.

The USB works fine on my windows 7 laptop but not on windows 10! Any advice on getting this thing to work with windows 10?

The USB drive could be corrupted. What I recommend you doing is going to your Windows 7 comp. and taking all the files, copying them to your desktop, then formatting the drive. Unplug it, put it into your Windows 10 comp., and make sure it works. Then, go back to your Windows 7 comp., and put all the files back.

Not corrupted, works fine on windows 7 computers, not on any windows 10 computers as I just tested.

Have you tried formatting it as NTFS?

Yep, formating to any particular file system has not helped.

I had this same issue last week with one of my customers system running windows 10

Right click: Start/control panel/auto play.

Removable drives: open folders to view files (File Explorer)

Click: Save.
Then reboot.
