Questions I Have Before Upgrading To Windows 10 - Underworldproblem - May 24, 2016

1. Would you recommend that I stick with Windows 8.1 or switch over to Windows 10?

2. Do I have to re-install drivers and will I lose my data if I upgrade to Windows 10?

3. If I want to do a factory reset, should I upgrade to Windows 10 first and then do it, or do it while I have Windows 8.1 and then upgrade to Windows 10?

4. If I factory reset do I have to download any MOBO, audio, graphics card drivers, etc? I have a Nvidia GTX 770 and a Gigabyte Z87-D3HP

5. If I factory reset after upgrading to Windows 10, do I need a product key or something?

6. If I do a factory reset do I need to re-install Java, Microsoft Redistributable Packages, and drivers/ things of that nature?

7. How long does it take to upgrade?

Thank you for answering these questions.

To keep this short,
If you upgrade via Windows update you will not need to update drivers (although the it would be a good idea to check for updates after).

It will not format the drive unless you specify to.
If you do the free upgrade (only valid for a month or 2 longer) you will not need a key.

If you are going to do a factory reset I would do it before upgrading it will shorten the time it takes to upgrade as there will be less the process has to look at.

It doesn't take too long to upgrade but it really depends on the build faster machine obviously go faster.....

I would recommend W10 if you don't have anything to hide or if you don't care about your privacy basically.
W10 takes less RAM which will optimise your gaming slightly.

I'm staying on W8.1 due to the privacy reason.

Win 10 is no worse than 7 or 8.1..... Regarding privacy...
It amazes me how many people are still living in fear of this.

Also for anyone who games DX12 will ONLY work on W10 so not sure how to explain it other than suck it up and learn how to diasable the features that you don't want just like any other Windows OS since 3.1.

Can I reinstall Windows 10 on my PC after upgrading?
Yes. Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, you can reinstall or perform a clean installation on the same device. You won’t need a product key to re-activate Windows 10 on the same hardware. For more info on how to create your own Windows 10 installation media, go to the Microsoft software download website.

Can anyone here confirm that it won't ask me for a product key, if I upgrade to Windows 10 first, then do a fresh install?

Thank you for answering these questions.

1. Yes you really should be upgrading.
2. No reinstalling needed. Updating your graphics driver is recommended, but you don't need to reinstall. You won't lose any data.
3. Update then do it. It honestly shouldn't matter though.
4. Just be sure you have the newest graphics driver installed after you are all done.
5. No. As long as windows is properly activated before hand, it will remain active after.
6. Not really. I wouldn't reinstall anything unless a program won't work without it.
7. Your mileage will vary. Fast hard drives allow it to be done in 15 minutes. Slower drives can take up to two or more hours.

What about Intel Rapid Storage Technology and Realtek HD Audio Manager? Will they be automatically installed after I do a fresh install not an upgrade or will I have to manually install them?

They will still be there no worries.

If you use the media creation tool, and completely empty out my partitions, will all my drivers be gone and forced to be manually re-installed?

If you had Windows 7 I would probably suggest you stick with that. But you don't. You have Windows 8.1. So yes I would suggest you upgrade.

The answer is most likely no. But in rare cases it does happen. I would always suggest you backup your sensitive data to an external device and backup your updated drivers to this drive as well(You should already be doing this).

You can wait until you're in 10. But doing it before then will greatly speed up the process. Whatever you do just make sure you at least uninstall the main antivirus before making the jump.

Nothing really for the motherboard(but there may be a bios update) — You should definitely update the graphics card driver using the GeForce experience found via nvideas support page.

No because this is done via the reset and refresh pc functionality. No product key is needed. The process is just like on Windows 8.1.

It usually brings a lot of stuff with it just fine. However I would suggest you make sure Java is up to date by downloading the latest version at java.com(and yes remove the outdated versions of Java if it prompts to do so) as well as flash is up to date: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer and reader as well http://get.adobe.com/reader
(May 24, 2016 12:29 PM)❤️ HYFR ❤️ Wrote:  7. How long does it take to upgrade?
It's somewhat long. 2-3 hours tops. It really depends on a couple things. Speed of hard drive, the processor you have and amount of ram as well as internet connection speed. The longest I've seen it run for is 2 days and that was over some crappy satellite internet.

No. Just click the upgrade. Unless you're installing via the iso on a disc then no-everything will still be right where it was. However, you should always backup your important stuff before upgrading.

If I use the media creation tool, and completely empty out my partitions, will all my drivers be gone such as Graphics Drivers, Bios Driver, Lan Driver, Intel Drivers, etc and will I be forced to be manually re-install them? Like what happens if I do a fresh install and my USB ports don't work since I don't have the USB Drivers install?

Also, I tried doing this earlier and got this error: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table.

* - Judicious⭐️ - May 25, 2016

If you do the fresh install using a boot USB or iso created by the media creation tool then you may need LAN or WIFI drivers depending on your computer. As far as USB the standard non 3.0 USBs should all be useable.

* - Underworldproblem - May 25, 2016

I tried doing this earlier and got this error: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table.

I googled, and have no idea on how to fix this for Windows 10 PC and a Gigabyte Z87 D3HP motherboard.

Odd. You might need to disable UEFI/secure boot in the bios and enable legacy/csm boot.

Yeah. It's still a pretty buggy piece of shit depending on what system it's running on and what software you use. I went back to 7 on mine as well.
